The smell has abated with more frequent stirring of the top layer. The flies are still there, but they keep to the compost and don't spread out. The sawdust pellets mix in with the rest of the stuff nicely. I'm thinking of what to add to the sandy, depleted soil in my flower/veg bed next year (I plan to do some serious digging in the spring). Compost of course, but there will hardly be enough. I would like to avoid peat products, so I'm thinking of some mulched bark for structure, but what to do for fertilizer?
