So I'm moving into my new apartment late July/beginning of August and I have a tiny porch! I'm so excited! Can I plant and grow things that late in the season?

And if you have any links or ideas for small space gardening, feel free to post!

I would be interested in info on this as well. We live in an apt and just acquired a small tomato plant that we do not know what to do with.

this is late-ish for a tomato but not really *too* late I don't think, so I'd really just head into the tomato thread if I were you. The tips would be no different.

You can indeed plant and grow thing but those things are just different things! Heh. I only know the more obvious things, like kale and onions. There are indeed more options though I am sure. A local nursery, closer to the date would be a good place to check. If they are selling starts of something during that time, well that means it's plantable at that time! It would be really odd and irresponsible of them to sell a start for something that was not able to be planted!

Agreed. Also, look for things that are very easy to grow and/or are cold weather veggies like lettuces, greens, spring onions, leeks, brussel sprouts, etc. Buy them as starter plants though because I don't think you'd get anything from seed that late.

Colorado has a short growing season, but our farm still starts the second round of squash, lettuce, spinach, and chard from seed in late July. And I think you could definitely do tomatoes if you bought some mature starts.

I second what everyone else has said. Find a good university based planting site, and they should be able to tell you what/when to plant based on your growing zone in Illinois. Purdue Univ. has an awesome growing guide that gives me each veg/fruit and at what times of the year I can plant them for optimal success.

Arugula! I have a small container on our fire escape, so I can tell you it grows very well in pots, and it's also only about 3 weeks from seed to edible greens. You might have time for several batches before it gets frosty!

I usually plant my fall crop of lettuce, mustard greens, arugula and mache in August.
