This year's winner for me is arugula. What can't it do?

Kale, for sure. Nothing can kill it, I've still got enough leaves to last me at least 3 more weeks, and it looks pretty in my garden.

my chard is just absolutely fabulous this year. collards are maybe still my favorite but the chard is just impressive. then again, maybe shiso is actually my favorite green, and i think i finally have it figured out. Can it be my favorite green if it's purple?

I had the most success with collards. But I really love collards, so maybe that is the reason.

If only this were true.

I'm digging on baby lettuces right now, but that's about all that's mature enough to eat yet.

What do you do with shiso? I planted it once and now it is growing all over my yard 3 years later! All I've done with it is put it on top of sushi, and cucumber salad.

I'd probably have to say arugula is my favorite green too. I love that it just keeps growing back every spring and fall. Even with my crappy garden this year, we've still managed to harvest some arugula that wasn't chomped by the gopher.

Following in a close second is chard, then mache. Both of them are pretty indestructible in my yard.

mmm, shiso... i make juice out of it. on the old boards i posted a tutorial- basically you make an infusion, then add an acid and it turns BRILLIANT purple (assuming you have red shiso. green tastes good but is crepe for juice). then sweeten and it's atomic lemonade.

Shiso is such an amazing plant. you can get the seeds, and it won't grow for love nor money. but if you have one go to seed, you will be swamped in shiso for the rest of your days.

that quinoa is gorgeous. looks like something the cockatiel would go nuts for. i'll have to investigate and try.

For the arugala, do you need to cut it back before winter if you want it to come back in spring? I grew it for the first time this year, or this is my first time gardening this year at all rather, and had success with arugala, but I would love it if it came back.

Its hard to choose a favorite but since I planted many types of greens and the only ones I had much luck with were arugala, kale and baby bok choy, those are my favorites.

I like my kale. All the other greens seem to get instantly devoured by the cutworms and grasshoppers, but they don't seem much interested in the kale. It's the most low maintenance thing in my garden.

We had silverbeet (chard) the size of elephant ears last night.
