Hey gardeners,

I just found something fascinating on wikipedia:

Carrots are useful companion plants for gardeners. There is experimental evidence that growing it intercropped with tomatoes increases tomato production.

Has anyone experienced this or found out about other useful combinations of plants? Here's a thread to discuss them.

Funnily enough, I just posted on another forum saying that I'm going to plant some cattors by my tomatoes. I'm going to grow four varieties of tomatoes this year, after last year's successful batch. I might grow some plants to sell at the market.

Also I hear basil is good to plant beside tomatoes.

I thought this was going to be about keeping plants as pets.

marigolds tend to keep some pests away, and i was just reading about companion plantings in vineyards to attract the bad critters to the companions instead of the vines.

It's my understanding that the plain old French marigolds (not the fancy new hybrid varieties) release a compound into the soil that's toxic to some harmful nematodes. They also attract parasitic wasps (they are also helpful to have in the garden).

Yeah, I do marigolds and I do pretty well with wasps and minimal pests.

I'm gonna try the carrots! So just put them in between your tomato plants? I've never grown carrots. I'm gonna' try rainbows.

Borage is very good to grow around tomatoes and self-seed like cray-cray.

I'm gonna end up choking my matos out with borage, carrots, marigolds and basil.
