as promised. perhaps the most appropriate post in a garden porn thread. "kales gone wild"
Image

the rest of the garden is spoiled because i have lots to write.
Spoiler: show
here you can see them growing out the side of the compost thing. and you can see the recently transplanted ones from under the tree into the top of the compost, since i don't need to empty it until leaf season. might as well use the space for something.
Image

moving along clockwise, we have the peas and shallots (i know, bad combo, but i had no choice) and behind that, the out of control boysenberry vine. gotta get more picture hanging wire and get it off the ground before next mowing. which obviously is past due. (strawberries are still on the other side, but i think at the end of the season i will move them with their friends on the front wall. it's not like i get to harvest any anyway. maybe if it's not inconveniently spaced next to a fence i would be more likely to get bird netting up over it.)
Image

oregano front and center, then carrots, garlic chives and onions and then peppers interspersed with more onions and carrots and marigolds and a borage at the back. basil is bordering it at the driveway.
Image

more carrots, more onions and leeks, chard hidden behind onions. 3? year old plum tree to the right. no flowers this year. maybe next.
Image

here you see the measly strawberries and a close-up of the leeks
Image

and this is the new garden space. (just learned of free compost just this year. took 10 trips to load up all the garden spaces. i bet it'll do wonders for my plants. excited! i used 4 sterilite totes and 3 kitchen-sized trash cans. on my last trip, i saw my brother-in-law dropping off a load. if i had only known. heh. maybe i would have had the time to actually get the garden planted a month earlier instead of wasting all my time and energy transporting it.) aah well.
tomatoes, borage, kale, broccoli, collards, melons and zucchinis. (recently seeded: nasturtiums, summer radishes for the companion effects. maybe they're mild. *fingers crossed* and daikon) i guess i can move the trash can now that the compost is down. i was using it for concrete chunks and thistle roots.
Image

potatoes and green beans with lovage all the way to the right, and grapes up on the picture wire trellis. chives in the background and asparagus all the way back. say hi to my neighbor's car!
Image

inside, you can see the shelf we built for my seedlings. it's cellular PVC trim, since i knew it might get wet. BTW, i forking LOVE capillary matting. this is the first year i've used it and OMG. so easy and carefree!
do you like the adhesive left on the windows after removing tape from hurricane-proofing the porch? stylin'!

thanks! :-) what's left to tackle is:

the back wall (to the right of the kale forest is a tangle of english ivy, virginia creeper, wild super thorny raspberries of some sort which aren't really all that tasty, bittersweet, pokeweed, and other nasties. also, that tree is a black cherry. it can grow to great diameter, and it's already almost hitting the neighbor's fence. that should probably go this year too.)

the strip in the center of the driveway. that's zoysia grass. it keeps wanting to creep into my garden spaces. i'll probably get some sort of plant on stepables.com maybe corsican mint.

same with the strips up against the street/sidewalk those are mostly weeds and clover. i have some roman chamomile seedlings on top of that white crate in the driveway that seem like they might be ready to be transplanted.

instead of doing all of that stuff i mentioned above, i hand weeded the lawn. it took days and days to pull up all of the plantain, but now the yard is so much better. (the flower spikes were everywhere, and i felt really bad for sadie. no safe place to poop without a flower spike rubbing up against her butt.) not to mention, we can go much longer in between mowings, since the actual grass stays short.

from street jul 28, 2014 (planning on planting the chamomile in the spots next to the street.)

more under the cut
Spoiler: show
oops. forgot to water the chamomile (now i have a solid tray underneath to let them soak up water better, and go a little longer in case i forget again.)
Image

peppers, basil, carrots
Image

boysenberries, peas, shallots (waiting for the peas to fully ripen so i can go ahead and replant them. let the shallots flower because of the beneficials. and maybe i'll plant the seeds.)
Image

blueberries, almost done for the season (hanging out with some flax.)
Image

grapes, potatoes and green beans (had the best luck with maxibel beans.)
Image

tigger melon growing up the borage
Image

tigger melon (little bit of powdery mildew. gonna give 'em some copper tonight)
Image

right side front "lawn" chard, onions, leeks, carrots, strawberries, thyme
Image

left side front "lawn" melons, zucchini, tomatoes, borage, sage, kale and collards
Image

unknown with a wasp (this is that volunteer [weed] plant i was curious about a few weeks ago. still haven't figured out what it is. but now it has flower spikes. closer to ID.) looks a little like a chrysanthemum leaf, doesn't it?

thanks! the companion planting is really working well.

have you ever gotten the weed to flower? now that i know it's an official weed, i feel less bad about pulling it out. it's definitely not a cosmos. the leafy bits are wider than cosmos. (also, it has a conical flower structure.)

i'm curious what bonus seeds are coming in with the compost. :-)

i never let any of them flower, so can`t tell you, but yesterday i found a really cool weed ID book that may have had a pic of it flowering- or maybe it was someplace else... i saw a lot of pages yesterday, but i want to save the weed book, so here it is for you- despite it being Irish (I think) a lot of the weeds are in my backyard in Brazil too.
