Just a mix from a hardware store. I think most of what you can see is oats and/or millet, and buckwheat. I'm thinking about digging it in and just doing a crop of broad beans over winter though so at least I get something out of it. I'm surprised anything is growing so well, the soil is so sandy and completely water repellant. Not to mention nothing has grown there for 20+ years and it's full of gravel.
Oh, and since then I've made two more little mantis friends. I found one in the kitchen cupboard and one in my bedroom, they're so cute!

I don't think they do anything fancy, but they grow fast and will add organic matter to the soil. Other things you could try growing are sunflowers, mustard seeds, store bought beans (for added nitrogen) etc.
Just throw it all in and see what comes up! (And remember to dig it in before it goes to seed)

I live in the frozen tundra of Northern NY, we just started our seeds this week! This is my first time starting from seed...I am perfectly prepared that we might end up buying all new plants, haha, but I hope it works out! My son is having a ball watching the plants grow. We have to go in and say good morning and good night to them.

i just put in seeds for brussels sprouts, two kinds of kale, chard, and spinach, and more asparagus. the brux, last kale, and asparagus last time came up but the last !#$)(*#$ grasshoppers ate them so i needed to create a screen cage for the seed flat and start again. I also sowed the millet and some crummy peas i had in the resting beds and they're coming up nicely. i'm actually considering cutting and stir frying the pea greens, though.

I'm not sure who's winning here. I have one spade left. These forkers just do not want to go.

oh god, you're giving me flashbacks. I had to rip out centipede grass in the front yard and that type of long grass in the back. As well as these yams or whatever that do not come out. I didn't break any spades though!!!!

I ran out of room in the garden so I stuck a shelf to the side of the house...

I appear to be growing a small forest. They're all Australian natives. The baby trees at the back are manna gums and peppermints to be planted in the reserve behind our house (favourite foods for koalas, if only there were any left there). The rest are a variety of shrubs, climbers, grasses and ground covers that need to be planted out sometime soon. My next mission is to dig up some of the grass on the nature strip/verge/whateveryoucallit and plant some of these instead. Oh and I also have some baby banksias, casuarinas and wattles that I am growing from seed I collected! Haha I know that's probably more information than you need but I've become obsessed!

ha! i thought they looked like eucalypts! i do a lot of work in the area of tree technology and cloning and get to see a lot of baby trees but they're usually E urograndis or one of the industrial clones. Casuarinas look interesting, I love these indigenous trees that are so different from one continent to another [or unlike anything else in existence].

These are my peppers and tomatoes all started from seed. They are now in the garden (just in time for some cold rainy weather). So I'll post a pic of the planted garden when I have a nice day. Its a total of 44 pepper plants and 15 tom's. I hope they all stay happy!

caterpillar wrote: I appear to be growing a small forest. They're all Australian natives. Yay for natives! My (intentional) garden is all edibles and natives (plus a few freebie placeholders). This is my garden's third year and I am super, super excited about how big some of my favorite plants have gotten including my Douglas' spirea, Pacific ninebark, Douglas' meadowfoam, and native roses. There are birds and bees and other animals utilizing the habitat I've created, which wasn't there a couple years ago. I think that's really neat! (native strawberries and Douglas' meadowfoam in the foreground here, with native irises, snowberry, and Douglas' spirea in the background) Another shot of my favorite herbaceous plant: Limnanthes douglasii or Douglas' meadowfoam I am also really excited about my perennial edibles which include apple trees, pear trees, plum trees, blueberries, strawberries, grapes, raspberries, and fun stuff like lingonberries, honey berries, pineapple guava, goji berries, currants, gooseberries, and jostaberries. Part of my little "orchard." All of your gardens look so weed-free, which is not at all the case for my garden at the present moment.

Something squashy! Zucchini or pumpkin. My partner and I planted both and then promptly forgot which was which. Rutabaga! Turns out it's better to plant these later in the season, but pffft rutabaga is great and I want it ASAP. This one is cheating, because the vast network of vines was present when I moved in, but I'm going to post it anyway. GRAPES.

My Amaranth is so beautiful! I got it as a start and all the growth it's done since I put it in my garden is hot pink! I also came home from a two week vacation expecting sad wilted plants but instead I found giant tomatoes! How do you know when it's time to pick green tomatoes?
