Aelle, I love your garden! Your pictures make me so happy.

If there is one thing I've learned, it is to never underestimate a little cactus.

Snapped a few photos this weekend!

First cuke!

Image

From the sidewalk. Sorry the quality isnt as good in these photos! I think it's from shooting into the light.

Those are all nasturtiums peeking between the bars! They are going crazy.

Image

the other balcony. Those are all salad greens in the boxes. So excited!

Image

here's the inside of that second balcony. I tried to do one of those rain gutter planters I saw on pinterest. Everything is a little stunted but I still love it!

I'm totally jealous of all your gardening skills! I'm just thrilled that my herbs are still alive after about 6 weeks.

Here's my main project I've been working on: 3 Three-Sisters' Mounds (corn, beans, and squash) with a fence around them. Half of the of the fence will get climbed on by snap peas and the other half by pole beans, and then summer squash just outside the fence.

Close-up of one mound, the beans will climb the corn and the squash fills in below:

We have strawberries!

Image

The beans keep on climbing:

And my tomato plant is getting really bushy, although no signs of flowers yet:

Image

Speaking of which, I pruned the tomato above its second set of true leaves, but is there a need to prune a second time after that?

First, what kind of tomato is it?

Determinate varieties don't really need pruning, for indeterminate varieties it really depends on how many main stems you want.

Currently you have 1 plus 4 side shoots, which will develop into stems much like the main one but slightly weaker. If you want to keep it that way then yes, you will have to keep taking out side shoots from each leaf axil, not just on the main stem but from each of the side shoots. If it is a particularly vigorous plant it may even regrow extra side shoots where you have already taken them out. It sounds like a lot of work but it only takes a second to pinch them out while they're about an inch long.

People have widely varying opinions about how many stems you should have, and are mostly convinced that they're right and everyone else is wrong, anything from a single stem to not pruning at all.

Since it's in a pot and has limited root space I'd recommend going with less rather than more. Maybe even just 2 or 3. The plant will be easier to manage, will not dry out the pot so fast, and have bigger and healthier fruit. It may however get quite tall, and require either staking or twisting it around strings like your beans.

Thanks caterpillar! It is helpful. This tomato is an indeterminate (Ravello) and I have no idea how many stems I want. What would happen if I let it be without more pruning - would the stems be too weak to support the fruits?

It will just keep branching and become more bushy, without staking tomatoes are more sprawling than upright, but as long as the branches hang down gently instead of snapping they will be ok. Without wind to strengthen the stems and sunlight coming from mostly one direction they will probably fall over at some point, but the main problem with this usually is disease from soil and dampness, so not really a concern for you!

I can talk tomatoes all day, but it would be interesting to hear what others do?

beauteous! (if the plants in the concrete blocks show yellowing, add some acidic fertilizer in there.) i love how you used the holes in the blocks to hold more plants. :-) those spots would be ideal for mint and tansy.

I love it too! The concrete blocks as planters is such a cool idea.
