I'm going to Columbia in a few weeks for a Mountain Goats show (!!!). . . well, technically the show is in West Columbia, but they're basically the same town, right? Anywho, I have all day off work, so I'm planning to come earlier in the day and do some exploring/ hanging out in town before the show. Anyone have any recommendations for fun stuff to do? And, of course, any awesome vegan-friendly restaurants?

Where is the show? Well. I've not spent much time there since I lived there 6 years ago...
Blue Cactus was a great restaurant. There was a veggie soul food place though too, don't know if its still there. Lamb's Bread maybe?

Congaree is an awesome little national park. Otherwise, Go grope the Strom Thurmond statue.

I recall liking Rosewood Market, but it's been a decade or so since I went there.

Thanks for the recommendations. The show is at the New Brookland Tavern in West Columbia. I did some poking around on Happy Cow, and Lamb's Bread and Rosewood both had some good reviews. If it's just me I'll probably hit Lamb's Bread. . . I may be meeting a friend there, he has an aversion to mock meats et. al, so if he comes we could get some stuff from Rosewood and picnic by the river. It looks like there are a lot of parks by the river, so fingers crossed for awesome weather. I love the Strom Thurmond statue groping suggestion, that has to happen.

I think there might be some good stuff around the New Brookland Tavern as well though. There is also an Indian grocery down there in W Cola, in which Asheville is lacking.

Hi! I live like 30 seconds away from New Brookland Tavern, but I've never been! Like the others said, Blue Cactus is supposed to be one of the best restaurants in the city, but be prepared to wait a long time. Don't go when you're super hungry.

Rosewood Deli has some really good food, but they don't always have vegan menu items. They do have a calendar online so check to make sure you go on a day when they are serving veg stuff... since you're going to be right next to it, check out Cafe Strudel. Not a lot of vegan stuff except for hummus, but it's a really cute place and lots of friendly folks. Get some coffee or drinks there if you have the time.

Have fun in Columbia! It's a nice town. Lacking in a lot of vegan options at the moment, but we're getting there. Just got a Whole Foods recently AND they're bringing in a raw vegan restaurant right downtown in the next month or so... might be here when you're in - Good Life Cafe. (There's also a Good Life in the area, but it's a bit of a drive if you want to go.)

:]

Thanks! This is belated, but we ended up going to Blue Cactus. . . it was awesome! If I'm ever back in Columbia, I'd love to go back and try other things there (ugggh. . . but it was so. freaking. hot. and humid there).
