Hi there!

I'll be at a conference in Ottawa June 2-5 and I'll be staying at the U of O and will be close to the Byward Market. It's been a few years since I've been to Ottawa - any good recommendations in those areas? I won't have a lot of time to travel around town much so I'm looking for nearby options.

Thanks!

Hit up Auntie Loo's (http://auntieloostreats.ca/) - they're a vegan bakery, but they've got some savoury treats too!

Hands down one of the best restaurants in the country is Cafe My House. Definitely a place to make time for.

Go to Thimblecakes if you can!

Cafe My House is pretty far from where I'm staying so I likely won't have time, too bad! I'll look up Auntie Loo's and Thimblecakes to see if they are near the U of O or Byward Market, thanks!

I likely won't have much time to leave those two areas. :(

Just got back from a trip there. There are so many options. Very close to U of Ottawa are:
Perfection, Satisfaciton, Promise: I love it, have always eaten well there. Just check with them to make sure what is vegan. http://www.perfectionsatisfactionpromise.ca/
Freshi: there is one at 50 Laurier
Govindas: haven't been but it's close by too.

Then on rideau st by King Edward (on the way to Aunti Loos) are a few Ethiopian Restaurants and near Aunti Loos is Flavours of the Caribbean which I never made it to, but is supposed to be Veg friendly.

There are lots of restaurants and take out in the Byward market area. Another cafe I like similar to Perfection is Peace Garden at 47 Clarence, inside the building. Check with them about what is vegan. We really enjoyed vegetarian pho at http://phobynight.com/ on dalhousie st.

There is also a health food store on York st (http://www.marketorganics.ca/) where I believe you can get some take out.

Thanks so much!!! The health food store will probably come in handy so I can grab some things to keep in my room. I don't think the conference is going to have a lot of vegan food unfortunately.

So I thought I was staying on campus but turns out the residence I'm staying in is off campus and is RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER FROM AUNTIE LOO'S!

What I've eaten so far:

Auntie Loo's Treats - on my first day here I made it to the bakery with like 10 min. to spare before closing time. I bought a nanaimo bar (it was super good! It didn't taste how I remember nanaimo bars tasting, but it's been a loooong time since I've had one) and a cookie sandwich (also yum).

Market Organics - my first night I picked up some take out to take back to my room. I had a tempeh thing over brown rice and a side of kale salad. It was alright. I wouldn't make a special trip to get take out here, but it is a handy option to have in the area.

Perfection Satisfaction Promise - I ended up having a decent sized break today for lunch and so I made it over to this cafe. I had a veggie burger and soup. It was a pretty solid meal. I don't know if I would go out of my way to travel here if I wasn't already in the U of O area, but it was pretty delicious and I'll probably be back for another lunch before I leave.

Cornerstone - Tonight I had to go out for dinner in the Byward Market with some work peeps and I had no say in the place. I was filled with dread that it was going to be super awkward when I couldn't eat anything but there ended up being a tofu bowl on the menu that was vegan. It had tofu, rice, veggies, and a coconut curry sauce, it was pretty decent. Again, I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, but if you get dragged there by omnis it is a pretty good choice.

I'm still here for a couple more days but I'm not sure how much free time I'll have vs. time I need to be at the conference. I'm hoping to make it to Pho by Night!

Final update:

Pho by Night - had time for a quick lunch here before I went to catch my train. The vegetarian pho is really good! Portion sizes are HUUUUGE. I almost ordered spring rolls as an appetizer, I'm glad that I didn't.

I also grabbed an Auntie Loo's cookies and cream donut from Market Organics before leaving and it was SO GOOD. We have it pretty good as far as vegan donuts go in Toronto, but this one knocked the Toronto donuts I've tried out of the park.
