CAS had been using carbon dioxide (CO2) to gas feral cats but had stopped doing that many months ago. Since then, he's been paying out of his own pocket to have cats brought to his facility from North Cowichan put down by lethal injection, he said.
Concern for Hughes led North Cowichan staff to recommend that the municipality reimburse up to $75 per cat to euthanize by injection animals received on behalf of the municipality by Coastal Animal Services.
Councillors shot down that idea however after a lot of discussion.
It would cost the municipality $5,000 per year, councillors learned, although there was no talk about that cash already coming out of Hughes's pocket.
The following is a link for a letter to send to the Mayor of Duncan & City Counsel members requesting they reconsider the proposal for funding for humane euthanasia.
