I've read the other three MTL threads, which are super helpful for my 6-month visit. I was wondering if any locals here would be willing to share where the cheaptest fruits and veg are on the island.

My interests lie between Pie IX and Saint-Laurent. But, of course, I'm willing to travel if it's worth it.

p.s. Where's the good coffee (and reasonably priced coffee makers)? I'm from the Bay Area, so "good" to me is the equivalent of Peets....I also like Teeccino.

might be a hike but the area it's it has tons of great middle eastern shops and if you have a car it's no biggie

I'd avoid it on weekend though , it gets kinda intense

I'm not a huge coffee nerd but I tend to buy either Santropol (it's fair trade , organic , locally roasted and avail in tons of bulk/specialty or health food shops) http://www.bruleriesantropol.com/en/

I also sometimes buy this one from President's Choice (store brand at Provigo , Loblaws , Maxi) http://www.presidentschoice.ca/LCLOnlin ... rod1110053 It's a good price/quality ratio and is fairtrade but I'm not familiar with the brands you mention so not sure how this measures up.


Segal's is a Montreal instituion . It's a small discount grocer that has lots of organic and vegan products. Best place to buy dried beans , tofu , soy milks , and stunt meats. They have a big section of Bob's Red Mill stuff , way cheaper than the supermarkets. It's kinda messy and disorganized so you have to dig buy when stuff is on sale , it's nuts.
The produce is hit or miss though , and the prices are really better for packaged goods than produce. There's a man who works there who's always quick to tell me about new vegan stuff they carry or if the brown rice is on sale. He's middle aged , on the shorter side with red hair. Balding on top. If you see him stoking shelves and are looking for something , he is the treasure trove of vegandom.
