Yup! Also you might experience a city-wide shut down if it snows or freezes rain this Friday so be prepared!

A couple of places have moved recently/since you were here. Unity Vegan Kitchen, Via 313, and Vegan Nom, in particular. So check addresses before you go.

I've been to Austin a few times as a vegan so far (bf has family there) and have loved the food. I look forward to getting popcorn tofu, donuts, frito burritos, breakfast tacos, etc... that I can't get here in Cleveland. We're going to be there next week during SXSW, which I am excited about, BUT I'm curious about the food situation. Do the vegan and vegan-friendly establishments typically run out of food during SXSW? Should I be preparing myself for the possibility of not being able to get my favorites? (If you can't tell, I'm very food-motivated when I travel. It's a big part of the experience for me, especially in a place with so much great vegan food.)

Welcome! I'll be hiding in my house for SXSW.

Carts might move for SXSW or change their hours. Vegan Yacht usually does, for instance. So check Facebook before going anywhere. Places shouldn't run out of food (if they know what they're doing), but expect more traffic and more waiting. Counter Culture is having extended hours, I know.

Baton Creole has reopened for SXSW! Vegan breaded jumbalaya on a stick and vegan beignets! They're at White Horse on East 6th now.

That's exciting!

A lot of trailers run out of food when it's busy anyway so if you have your heart set on trying something just check their Facebook, most of them are really good about updating. But you probably won't have to worry about places running out of food until later in the night during the music fest. What you will have to worry about is long lines and tons and tons of people at places like Bouldin & Whole Foods.

Also I made a sxsw guide http://lazysmurf.wordpress.com/sxsw-vegan-guide/

"23 Things to do in Austin" includes lots of meat, but also 2 vegan options (Red Rabbit donuts and Counter Culture) and a veggie burger!

Hey! I am going to Austin next week for work! Two of the days I have to work, but I'm off on Wednesday and don't have to be back at the airport til like 5. I want to blow my per diem for Monday/Tuesday on tasty vegan things. Obviously I need to eat several tacos and I want to hit Capital City Bakery but beyond that I'm not sure what to look for. Please advise!

(Also if anyone like... wants to come eat a baked good with me... I would be into that.)

I'm guessing you are staying in the downtown area? And will have a car available? The Vegan Nom (at the Buzz Mill on Riverside) is my choice for tacos. They are open for breakfast and the Buzz Mill sells Red Rabbit donuts too. You might check out the North Loop House and Yard for lunch -- all the trailers are now vegan (Taco 'Bout It, Unity Vegan Kitchen, and BBQ Revolution, Red Rabbit Cooporative). That's also not far from Sweet Ritual for ice cream. Do yourself a favor and buy a million kolaches at Capital City Bakery. Hit up the Wheatsville on Guadalupe or the Whole Foods on Lamar for snacks/supplies when you get in. Cooler people than me will probably chime in with better suggestions!

Those are pretty much my suggestions too. Bouldin is an Austin favorite if you've never been there. Don't forget the popcorn tofu poboy (or burrito at the south location) at Wheatsville. I would do Wheatsville for the popcorn tofu and groceries, then Boldin, Vegan Nom, and the Vegan Trailer Park when you have more time. It'll be hot so hit up the trailer park early or late.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm up in the Arboretum area (sans car) but am getting around okay on the bus. I just finished eating dinner at the Dojo (thanks to lazysmurf's blog for mentioning it!) and am now pleasantly overfull after inhaling half the vegan menu.

Tomorrow I have to check out in the morning but my flight isn't til 7 pm, so I'm going to head downtownward and hit Sweet Ritual and also hopefully a taco somewhere in the rough vicinity because I haven't had a taco here yet and I've been here almost 3 days people.

Also Mandy, I had a kolache there yesterday and was kicking myself for not buying like 14 of them. Especially when I had a sad work catering salad for lunch today.

Sad work food in Austin is the worst! Have you been to Wheatsville yet? If not GO THERE and load up your bag with popcorn tofu and other deliciousness for the trip back. I'm trying to think of a really good taco up by Sweet Ritual and I can't! There is Taco Bout it one of the vegan taco trucks right over there on north loop but I haven't gotten to try very much yet. But Unity Vegan Kitchen is there too and it's super good. And BBQ revolution AND the Red Rabbit doughnut trailer. Maybe you can get the bus down to Cherrywood Coffeehouse for breakfast tacos and coffee and then head to northloop for lunch, walk down to Sweet Ritual and then grab a bunch of shiitake at Wheatsville on the way to the airport. Then your entire day can revolve around eating :) That's how I would do it!

I ended up doing Cherrywood (three tacos plus a latte, shiitake those potatoes are good), then walked to Sweet Ritual but it wasn't open yet. So I went over to Shipe Park and laid on a bench and read for an hour and a half, went back over to SR and ate a crazy huge sundae, then walked to the Capitol, looked around outside a bit and then headed to the airport. Pretty good dang day.

I liked Austin so much but the airport is a bit shiitake! My flight isn't for another hour and a half and I've already walked the length of it like eight times.

That's a pretty far walk! Especially since it's like 5,000 degrees! There is usually live music at the airport but yeah it is small. Safe travels!!!

It wasn't too hot in the morning! Up through the Hyde Park area and the UT campus, it was nice and shady and breezy. The stretch from UT to the Capitol, which I think is like 1/4 of a mile or something ludicrously short like that, was KILLER though.

Your bus system is pretty good! Pretty much everywhere I walked to was on a bus line (I just felt more like walking than standing around waiting for a bus) and I loved the bus pass on your phone thing. Santa Cruz has got to get that, it would simplify my life immensely.

Is this place still around? Is it likely to still be around in May 2015?
