Guys, guys, guys... those beignets are like the greatest thing ever. EVER. And super cheap.

But the ones down south aren't vegan I think. Have to go to the trailer. You won't be confused, the south location isn't listed anywhere anyway. And the tofu jumbalaya is awesome so get that for a meal before the best dessert in town. And that's saying something in a town with Sweet Ritual.

Baton Creole is on east 6th, not the location I mentioned earlier though.

Yeah the trailer moved a few months ago. I wonder why the Sweetwater location doesn't have the vegan beignets? When you read their yelp reviews half of them are like "hooray for vegan food". And it's not like anyone would be able to tell. Hopefully it will change. I need to go there again, it's so close to my house.

They have a different chef down there. He has his own recipe that he wants to do for beignets.

Yes, I'm at Congress and William Canon so I was pretty curious about Sweetwater's vegan specifics. I think it's too far south for most of my friends to travel to for football games, etc. though.

I'm sure we'll have some updates before VVC next year, but here is a nice long list of vegan news in Austin right now: http://www.redhotvegans.com/2014/09/veg ... -bites-13/

It sadly includes the breaking up of the all vegan trailer park, but most of the places are still around, just in new locations.

I'm going to Austin on Thursday!! I'm so excited, I've never been :) My only regret is that we planned such a short trip - thanks to work, we'll only be in town for Thursday evening/night, Friday all day, and Saturday all day (leaving early Sunday morning). My partner and I already agreed to split meals so we can eat more often at more places!

Bistro Vonish and BBQ Revolution are right next to each other so that's a place I wouldn't skip. Since almost all the best vegan places are trailers I'm always checking their Facebook page to make sure they're open before I go. And to check on their location in case they moved.

My other "must go" places would be Bouldin Creek Cafe, Vegan Nom, Unity Vegan, and a bac'n cheeseburger from Arlo's. And maybe the vegan jumbalaya on a stick and beignets from Baton Creole. And Counter Culture, Golden Spike, and Cool Beans if you have time. And the Rabbit Food Grocery Store of course. I should have stopped a while ago. Now I'm hungry.

And it was 70 today, but now it's freezing. You picked one of the 3 days a year that temperatures are under 40, but I'm sure it'll be warm again by the weekend.

Hi, what is there to do as far as seeing/doing/exploring things and not just eating? Trevor is coming with me to Austin during VVC but not attending the Con, so is looking for cool sites and breweries and nature stuff.

the bats! those are my favorite austin residents. :) that's an only-at-sunset kind of activity, though.

i have things i always liked to do when we lived there (and often do when we go back), but i fear i will sound like a dorky tourist so maybe i should leave it to the current locals. heh.

I wrote this post A Vegan Tour of Austin where I tried to lay it all out there. I know VVC and mollyjade are both working on posts about it too.
My favorite natural stuff is hiking around the greenbelt and Barton Springs. Here is a good post about access points
http://austinot.com/austin-greenbelt-guide

Driving out to Hamilton Pool is totally worth it but call ahead to make sure it's open, it's been raining a ton and if there is bacteria in the water they shut it down since it's a nature preserve.

Tubing the comal in New Braunfels is super fun, we do it all the time.

I haven't been to any of the breweries but there are quite a few around that have tours and stuff.
http://365thingsaustin.com/2013/02/08/a ... ery-tours/
But just for drinking beer I recommend Craft Pride which is on Rainey street and has only local craft beer and Bangers, also on Rainy, which has over a hundred beers on tap

And I always always take everyone to the Alamo Drafthouse, particularly the Ritz or South Lamar, for special events. Master Pancake does a MST3K style comedy over the movie thing and it's so fun. And they have buffalo cauliflower on the menu now! (You can eat and drink there, waiters come by during the movie). You have to buy tickets in advance! Everything usually sells out.

Here's a good list of breweries with hours (http://www.craftbeeraustin.com/texas-br ... tings-map/), but Jester King is by far the most famous brewery here. Jester King uses wild yeast so all of their beers are a bit sour, but they're very sought after. It's west of Austin near Hamilton Pool/Enchanted Rock/Hill Country area so I'd combine those activities. Hops and Grain is in town and open daily so it's a great brewery for convenience. Lazy Smurf mentioned Craft Pride, but forgot to tell you that they have incredible vegan Via 313 pizza there. It's a little greasy square of Chicago style pizza with daiya available. I don't think there's vegan friendly food at the breweries, though Hops and Grain isn't far from Cool Beans, Counter Culture, Baton Creole, etc.

I feel I have to point out that it's Detroit style pizza with Follow Your Heart! It's my favorite in the whole world.

Haven't had it in a while. Better go eat it this week as penance.
