My dude & I are going to be in Austin for five weeks this May / June and need to hire a car whilst we're there. We're not US citizens so we can't use zipcar etc and the lowest quote we've found so far is $1030 (about $20 a day) which eats into a huge chunk of our budget.

Does anyone local have any ideas or tips for a cheaper way to do this or are we just going to have to deal?

I feel like you could buy a cheap car for cheaper than that! Then you could donate it to an org that takes cars.

When are you getting here and in what part of town? Have you seen that quite a few new places opened since you were last here? Including a waffle truck, a french toast truck, and fusion eggrolls :)

Yeah we totally thought about buying a cheap car but it looks like it'd be super hard to get insurance without a permanent US address/US licence. Also it'd be just our luck that it'd break down and cost $$$ to fix or make me miss my talk at VVC or something!

I'm pretty sure we get there May 12th & we're staying right near Barton Springs. I am SO excited about all of the new places, I'm gonna eat all of the french toast and waffles and the place I was reading about on your blog earlier sounded ridiculous! Cannot wait!

Maybe try calling Hertz, from my brief googling it looks like they do special rates for UK citizens who are staying more than 28 days. I also saw Travel Jigsaw which was quoting lower http://www.carhire3000.com/Traveljigsaw/

I'm excited you are staying in my hood! A new Arlo's location is opening on South First next weekend! Let's plan tubing too, and see if we can figure out how to do a mega VVC trip.

Yes! Thanks LS! Have passed these onto Nick to look into further. Sadly from my brief googling it looks like the Hertz thing is only if you're in the UK...I'd totally call them if it wouldn't cost a million pounds a minute from here!

I'm super excited to be staying in your hood, we have to eat at all of the new places together and I need to finally meet your dogs and go tubing. I went for the first time in Laos a couple of weeks ago and it's so fun. You wanna team up and get this VVC tubing trip organised? I'm totally down to help I just can't make any phone calls until I get to the US which may be a bit late! I think an after-after party on Monday could be cool because Wednesday may be too early for most people and stuff's happening from 3pm on Thursday.
