Alrighty, I'm ready to take the home-made kombucha plunge! I have everything but the scoby, Google is surprisingly unhelpful with this - is there any where in the city to get one that isn't off some stranger's ad on craigslist? Super creeped out, probably for no good reason but I'd like my first trial to be fool proof. I know you can order ones online but delivery refrigerated items to apartments is nearly impossible!

if you don't get a scoby, grow your own!!!!
I made my own from a bottle of supposedly raw kombucha. look at the addicted to kombucha thread. i went to the HFS and asked the person there which one was most likely to grow me a scoby, then i followed some online directions, and now i am a proud mama of a scoby.
[some years ago i remember there was an online directly of worldwide scoby donors]

Yeah, I just dump a bottle of unflavored kombucha in a big jar full of cooled black tea and sugar. Only takes a few days to get a scoby if your space is fairly warm.

I don't think they have to be refrigerated when they're shipped. I could ship you one for the cost of shipping.

here's a tutorial for growing a scoby from store-bought kombucha that I've used with success: http://bonzaiaphrodite.com/2010/05/how- ... -kombucha/
