Hi all - I'm still on a sugar-high from Sunday's Holiday Potluck (((see Pepperpot's post in FOODPORN))) so I wanted to get a Save-The-Date out for January's Potluck.

Mark your calendars for SUNDAY, JANUARY 25th!

The theme is "Alphabet Soup" inspired by DropScone's thread: viewtopic.php?f=18&t=32605

Each guest should bring dishes beginning with (or highlighting an ingredient with) the same letter as their first Name! (for example, if your name were Jennifer you might make Jerk Chickpeas, Jalapeno Poppers, or a Jam Tart).

Location & Time are still TBD... but it will be in the afternoon somewhere in the Chicago area :-D

Yay! Thanks for starting the thread, Diana!

I'm so excited for this theme. It should lead to some amazing and creative dishes. I'm glad I have a while to brainstorm!

Nectarines, Navy Beans, Northern White Beans, Not-tella, Nanaimo Bars, Noodles, Nuts...

That's all I've come up with so far. N is hard! Anyone else started brainstorming ideas?

I've already decided I'll be making the Deviled Kale Salad from Salad Samurai. Not sure what else though - let me know if you have any D requests :-)

Pepperpot - For N I think you have a great start already there! There's also Napa Cabbage, Nori, Nutmeg, NACHOS!!!, Nuggets, and Napoleons!

I am nowhere near Chicago but this looks like the best thing ever. I'm super jealous! And I may need to steal this idea someday.

I might have to take some liberties and re-name a few recipes to make things begin with H.

Otherwise, I hope you guys like hummus.

Hollie - of course we love hummus! Feel free to take liberties and have fun :-)

Hmm...perhaps a mélange of muffins. Or something minty.

I made hazelnut sandwich cookies as one of the things I took to the Alphabet Soup potluck I went to last year (my surname begins with H, and our organiser didn't specify which name you had to take the letter from!).

I do have hazelnut something-or-other on the list I'm compiling! Also, I love hazelnut anything, so that was an easy decision.

Hi all -

Just wanted to pop in with an update on time & location.

I'll be hosting this one at my place in Evanston, just a tad bit north of Chicago. I'm close to the UPN Main St Metra & Purple-Line EL stops and there is also plenty of parking on my street. PM me if you are able to join us and I'll send over my address.

Does 1pm work for everyone?

-Diana

Thanks for hosting, Diana! 1pm works fine for me.

I've got a lot of ideas, but haven't quite decided what I'm going to make yet. And Oliver's started thinking of "O" dishes too, in case he decides to attend!

Sorry, no enchiladas or eclairs from me. I won't be making it to this one. Please take lots of pictures so I can wish I was there!

Hollie, If you still need ideas:
Hot (as in spicy or warm)
Hunan
Hoisin sauce (braised, baked, dressed, fried- ingredient)
Hagis
Halva
Hawiian
Hungarian
Herbed
Halal
Horse radish
Hearts of palm
Honeydew melon
Hominy
Hash
Hash browns
Haitain
Habinero
Haricot verts

Any one else want ideas? This is the kind of thing that keeps me up at night.

Please do steal it! We stole it from a UK ppker who was asking for ideas for an Alphabet Soup potluck she was going to!

Hee hee. I am definitely doing the *H*ash brown-crusted quiche from Vegan Casseroles. And something *H*azelnutty. I just thought of Hoisin sauce, which I have sitting unopened on the back of my stove. There was also a salad in one of the books that starts with H that I need to look into. I have a list.

How many things to people typically bring? I tend to bring too many things to stuff like this.

And should I bring beer? Is that appropriate? (I don't have any that start with H, though...)

Sorry you can't make, Rhizo. I'd like some ideas for N, please! I have some, but I still haven't made any definite plans yet, so I could use some inspiration!

It looks like we should have a pretty good turn out!

So far it looks like we have Hollie, EmJaeDee (+1?), Pepperpot, Myself +1 *and* it looks like my Evanstonian Vegan pals from last time I hosted are coming too (hooray for new PPK recruits!).

Pepperpot - I hope Oliver decides to join us! We could use a letter O at the potluck :-) Maple the cat is cheating and sharing credit for Mike's M dish.
Hollie - One dish to share is plenty, though we all love cooking so much, its often hard to stop at 1 :-) I love the Hashbrown-crust!!!
Rhizo - that H list is awesome!!!! You made me crave Horseradish.

Hey I can go to this! I'm thinking coconut cream pie. Or cheesecake. Man C is the easiest letter. Maybe something savory too...chickpeas? Chimichurri? Maybe mushrooms if Michael comes with me.

I thought of a bunch of Ns... Then scrolled up and saw they'd all been mentioned already! How about...nuggets, naan, New England C(g)lam Chowder?

Sounds like we're going to have a good turnout! I think I've decided what I'm making:

Nacho Tots Casserole from Vegan Casseroles
Nanaimo Bars (my first time making or eating them, so I hope they turn out ok!)

And Oliver has decided to make Oatmeal Peanut Butter Cookies from VWAV.

One dish is plenty, but some of us tend to go overboard and make two, three, or more dishes! It's totally up to you. Beer is made from *H*ops, right? So it still fits the theme!

I'm still trying to decide between Hazelnut Chocolate Cake or the Hash Brown Crust Quiche... But it does look like we have sweet stuff handled, so I'll go with the quiche.

And hummus.

This quiche miiiiight be a disaster.

The recipe is weird. The photo shows the casserole in a deep, round casserole dish, but the recipe says to make it in an 11x17 dish/pan. The hashbrowns aren't enough to cover the bottom, and I had to take them out of the oven 15 minutes before the recipe says to because they were starting to burn. Then the quiche mixture would barely cover the bottom, and the hashbrowns don't stay down when you're spreading it over them.

I mean, I'm bringing it regardless, but. At least there's hummus.
