It was really great to see the Brissie PPKers who could make it to lunch today. Always nice to see Koala T, but it was great to meet Caterpillar, Sforzando and Cam!

No! I love their tempeh burgers but never go to Kingsland. That's crepe. I have a friend who works there so will check that it's not just being renovated or something. I did see there was lots of junk in there when I walked past a couple of days ago.

Same but only because I am much faster at scanning and bagging my items. Standing in supermarket lines makes me cranky.

I prefer Coles but will shop at Woolies because sometimes there are products only avail. there.

Awesome, I'll have to check it out. I never go to Woolies, I'm a Coles loyalist, have been since they introduced the hilarious 'you'll love Coles'-branded packaging. You know, the ones with the 'everyday people' professing why they love Coles. My favourite ever was the self-proclaimed 'party dudes' on their corn chips. They've since gotten rid of that packaging, but I'm too frightened of change to go elsewhere by now.

You'll be glad to know that we don't call corn chips 'corn chips' in my house anymore. We call them 'party dudes'. Like, 'I really want nachos, too bad we don't have enough party dudes'.

ANYWAY, I just made the most awesome batch of choc chip cookies ever for Boyfriend to give to his thesis supervisors when he hands everything up tomorrow. Except they look exactly like Subway cookies. So I think I have to write them some kind of disclaimer explaining that he didn't pick them up on the way there.

I like that I can use this thread to update you all on my mundane activities.

Coles corn chips, I mean party dudes, are some of the best corn chips, imo.

Nice work on the cookies. I made some mars bar cookies (using Twilight bars) and my bf loved them and said "They taste like Subway cookies" I wasn't sure if it was a compliment but he said it was.

And my mundane news is that we spent 10hrs yesterday painting and my bf and I both still have killer headaches. Stupid paint fumes.

I wish I could magic up some dinner. I want tacos w/ salsa and guac.

PPKers in Brisbane: I've taught my recently vegetarian best friend/flatmate how to make seitan. She's going to Brisbane to visit family for Christmas and wants to make seitan for xmas lunch. Do you know where she could find wheat gluten?

Melanie I've only bought it from the market here, but that is only on sat mornings and you would have to drive there. I'm sure someone else here has a better idea.

You can get it from probably any health food/organic store or Green Edge (our vegan shop). I usually get mine from Healthy Life in Toowong because Toowong Village is my local shops. I've even ordered it off www.crueltyfreeshop.com.au before. Caterpillar, which market? West End? Rocklea? Rocklea is a pain for me to get to but I can do West End.

Yeah Rocklea, I don't go very often because I used to go to the vic markets in melbourne and this one sucks in comparison so I got bitter. I should start going more though.

Thanks for helping me help guys! She's trying to be mostly vegan more recently too. I still have Brisbane eating out recommendations from a couple of years ago in the old thread, but let me know if anything new and good has popped up that I should pass on.

i hate the self serve checkouts. i was once a checkout girl, so i see them as the supermarket not paying as many employees but still charging us the same rediculously jacked up prices. i have also worked on several fruit and veg farms, and i know the s.h.i.t.e. prices the big supermarkets are paying farmers. it's disgusting to pack crates of lychees and see what the farmer got paid and then see them for $17 / kg in the local woolies. so yeah, i insist on those buggers paying a human to help me out :)

I use the self-serve machines if I'm at Woolies, but... they hate me. I would say that around seven times out of every ten I use them, something goes wrong. I appreciate that it's my fault for not behaving in a way the machine understands, but — argh! It's usually something like a weight error because I dared to slightly readjust something after I'd already put it in my bag, or other things I don't even understand that make me think of Cameron's "breathed on wrong" line from Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I get to the point of practically holding my breath the whole time until I get the receipt.

That's one thing I miss about NZ, you could buy booze at pretty much any supermarket in the whole country (except west Auckland of course). But I buy less beer when I shop so I guess that's a good thing...?

I'm a life long westie accustomed to booze-free supermarkets and enjoy it when mates come out to our place expecting to be able to pick up a box of beer at the shop up the road on the way. Silly city people : )

But the one in Kingsland is still there? I'd only just heard there even was one on K Road but we went to the one on New North Road a few times a few years ago. Keep talking about going back one day since I heard they have a tempeh burger and I'm yet to try tempeh, but we don't have the spare cash to eat out so I'll just hope it hangs round for a while yet!! : )

The other day I asked a Coles girl if she judges people on the contents of their trolleys and she admitted that she totally does. Then we laughed about this woman we both saw who had an entire trolley full of Spam.

I'm sure people think I am weird with all the Fry's products I buy.

edited because i'm sure that stuff may be frowned upon.

I have a friend who works in Coles and she keeps a list of people who buy weird things. Apparently there's a woman who comes in once a week and buys about 60 tins of cat food. Nothing else.

Ha, that's amazing.

I used to judge people on their coffee orders when I was a barista. I was always nicest to the people who just ordered black, brewed coffee and less friendly (but still vaguely pleasant) to the ones that just came in for a bucket of sugar and whipped cream.

Except for this super high girl who once came in and literally ordered our largest size cup, filled with whipped cream. I high-fived her and gave her free refills.
