Paloma's right that Amsterdam is pretty darned safe. I've never felt threatened there, even walking alone at night. And De Pijp area is totally fine too. There are lots of restaurants and cafes in the area so there are always lots of people around in the evenings. Plus, you'll be here in June, so it'll be light fairly late.

Not sure what you like to do, but there are some good possibilities in De Pijp for going out. If you're into jazz or world music, there's De Badcuyp. And the Rialto (arthouse cinema) is also in the neighborhood. Plus, like I said, lots of cafes/bars/restaurants. And the city center is totally accessible from there.

I don't know my schedule yet for June, (although I have blocked out the 6th!) but I might be available to hang one of the other evenings you're there.

Speaking of hanging, lepelaar, my AMS schedule is completely upsidedown. I'm coming again on the 30th, and should be at VU from 1pm or so. Is there any chance you'd want to (be able to) meet earlier in the day? I'm a morning person, and am happy to take ridiculously early trains.

(Weekends are out for you, right? Because I'm going to be there on the 7th and maybe 8th, also.)

Fridays aren't great for me either. (I always work F, S & S. Ahh... retail....) Some Fridays I might be able to meet for coffee in the morning before work, but the 30th isn't one of those. So is the Thursdays in A'dam thing not going through?

Yep, I'm working the 7th and 8th (whoohoo, double pay for working on Easter!) as well as the 9th (also double holiday pay!) If you know any other dates you'll be in town, wing me a PM. We'll pin down something one of these days!

It does! :( of course the recipe may have changed again since then, but the labels on these meat analogues aren't always very clear.

I did have a tempeh dish with Chinese spices there that was amazing as well, so I'd still recommend the place! but I always loved their buffet which used to be almost completely vegan.

I went there yesterday and the lady said she hadn't heard anything about milk in the 'chicken'; she even checked the label for me (though I ended up having babi panggang and 'squid'). Supernom!

Ohh! Yum!!

I'm surprised she didn't know about the milk thing, though - I talked to them about it on the phone and then they checked the ingredients while I was there, too. Anyway, yes, the babi pangang was definitely still vegan last time I was there too, so that should be fine! and delicious! I guess the ingredient list for the mock meats just keeps changing (at least, that's what they told me at Sie San (the vegetarian toko) in den Haag).
I'm glad most of their dishes are still OK and that you had a great meal there! I love that babi pangang. The guy at Sie San once explained to me how to make it at home and it sounded fairly simple but of course I don't remember and didn't write it down...

Hi everyone! I'm Lauren and I'm living in Groningen for a couple of years. I'm a transplant from Berkeley, California, USA. I've been a vegan since I was a kid.

Lutin told me about the upcoming fun day in A'dam. Mind if I join in? I haven't seen much there except the typical tourist sites, and I'd love to go along with a group that can introduce me to some good veg food :)

Maybe we knew each other in Berkeley, too! (How weird would that be.)
I would love it if you joined us! Oh man, every time I reopen this thread I get so excited!

Hey I just realized that June 7th is a holiday here in Bavaria. The chances of me making it have suddenly increased!

We (me and my parents) are getting in to Amsterdam on Monday 4 June in the afternoon and leaving on Friday. I've told them I'm meeting up with some people I know on the Wednesday (that would be you guys!), and now I'm getting slightly apprehensive about how the rest of it is going to pan out. I haven't been on a holiday with my parents in a couple of decades! Any suggestions? Preferably not involving huge amounts of walking. We're going to be slightly out of the centre but with good public transport links.

What kind of activities do they like?

Personal favorites of mine are:
The Alard Pierson museum: a relatively small but nice museum with ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman artefacts
The Amsterdam museum: about the history of Amsterdam, has a lot of heirlooms, paintings and archaeological finds.
The Hortus Botanicus: quiet botanical garden with beautiful exotic greenhouses, ponds and a large outdoor garden with lots of trees and flowers
The Tropenmuseum: ethnograpic museum with a lot of exotic artefacts on display.

All these places are within or near the city centre, and can easily be reached by tram.

I'm pretty excited about the Amsterdam museum. And an amazing Ethiopian place called Adis Ababa (the male owner is vegan) http://www.addisababa.nl/

I was browsing around for trains, and for the 6th, the cheapest + earliest option for me to get there is 11.15. I can try to catch up to you guys if you don't make it too difficult (no interwebs on my phone) ;). Are we doing dinner too?

I'll just assume this is the Generic Dutch PPK Thread™ these days :)

just a heads up: next weekend (June 2) in Rotterdam is VegeQ - like a BBQ, but veg*n. I don't know how much is specifically vegan, but they do make reference to it, so it's probably not too bad.

Central Station? Seems the easiest. In the central hall below the Burger King maybe?

What do folks want to do? Especially the folks that are coming from out of the country. Museums? Shopping? Cheesy boat tours? I'm up for almost anything! I guess we'll do either lunch or dinner at De Bolhoed since this was mentioned upthread. Should we swing by the BioMarkt? (Where I tend to find the most hard to find vegan ingredients in town.) VegaLife? Other thoughts?

Works for me (and sounds much vegan-friendlier than under the BK).

I'm up for anything that doesn't involve too much walking and preferably isn't hideously expensive. If people are going to be walking a lot I'll probably just come for part of it, or take a break in the middle and catch up later.

Yay meetup!

If we start at central station, we could first go to Vega-Life (vegan shoes etc.), then walk over to Terra Zen for lunch. These are all at very close distance.

After that we could take a boat tour (no walking needed), or take the tram to a museum and/or a big health food store like the Biomarkt. Then dinner somewhere. The Bolhoed? Some Asian place?

We could also do dinner at some squatters' café! They usually have a lot more Amsterdam atmosphere than the average restaurant (and they're cheaper). There are several that appear to serve dinner on Wednesdays, though none of them are really in the city centre: http://www.goudentips.org/vegetaries.html
