hello all,

i'm coming for a visit to Amsterdam beginning of April, and I would like your recommendations regarding b&b/hostels, vegan places to eat or shop and generally anything that is worth exploring.
would anyone like to meet up for dinner or show me something?
I'll be coming from Dusseldorf/Germany and I do speak Dutch.

thanks,
uli

from the Fri 4th to the 6/7/8th (Sun/Mon/Tue) of April. Undecided yet if i want to extend my stay until the 8th because I don't know how expensive a hostel or b&b might be. Are the museums open on Mondays? I know about the shops being closed on Mondays in the Netherlands.

Most shops are open on monday from 13.00. Don't really have tips for you. Hope you enjoy your stay here!

When I visited Amsterdam in 2012, I enjoyed:
-Anne Frank House
-The Botanic Gardens
-The Tulip Museum (seriously; definitely worth the €2 entrance fee!)
-The Cat Museum
-Cycling round the city, which I did for hours - so many parks, canals and beautiful places
-The Brouwerij 't IJ Pub
-I went to an amazing free jazz concert at the Bimhuis one night

Most museums are closed on Monday. You should definitely check out Vegalife on the Singel and de Vegetarische Slager on the Rozengracht (although be aware that not all the VS products are vegan). Amsterdam is not great for vegan restaurants. Terrazen is totally vegan but the quality of both food and service can be iffy. De Bolhoed has some vegan options that can be ok but aren't really exciting. Avoid the Vliegende Schotel, which just got a rightly scathing review in the Dutch papers. There are a few squats that are supposed to be really good, but I've never been to them. I've heard good things about De Peper on the Overtoom. Recently, Cornelie posted about a new cafe with vegan options on the Frederick Hendrickplantsoen, but I don't remember what it's called.

I don't really have much info on places to stay, but I've heard the Stayokay (IH) Hostel in the Vondelpark is pretty nice. If I still lived there, I'd have loved to meet for lunch/coffee/dinner.

HappyCow is also a great resource for finding vegan food around the world if you don't use it already, and there are loads of places listed under Amsterdam: http://www.happycow.net/

My friends own the place on the Frederik Hendrikplantsoen! Their vegan plate is delicious, especially if you like focaccia. There are a ton of amazing Ethiopian restaurants (all of which understand vegan, since vegan = fasting food for them). If you want specific Ethiopian rec's, let me know. I've been to 3-4 of the 12+ in Amsterdam. Check the museum websites, too. I'm not sure lepelaar is right about being closed on Monday's. That's true where I live, but I remember investigating it once and being surprised that the opening hours were different in A'dam.

I went about four years ago and really enjoyed it. It's such a beautiful city.

The only thing I really recommend that hasn't been mentioned already is the Torture Museum! It was fascinating, if you're into that sort of crazy thing.

Huh. I just checked the Rijks, Van Gogh, and Stedelijkmuseums and you're right! They're totally open daily! Why did I think most of the museums were closed on Monday? That may be a change in recent years, because I remember having out of town guests and the only museum being open on Monday was the Tropenmuseum, but that was a bunch of years back.

thank you again for your replies. i have now decided to postpone my trip because hotels and hostels are so expensive over the weekends. I'll do it in the summer and come during a week so it's cheaper when i next go to utrecht.

thanks so much for your help,
uli

Amsterdam is getting a little more awesome for vegans all the time! Last weekend, a small veg*n grocery store opened in the city centre: Vegabond on the Leliegracht. And then yesterday, a vegan lunchroom/take-away called 'Dophert' opened in the west part of town.

Sadly, we may be loosing TerraZen soon, since the municipality decided that street has 'too many restaurants' and told them they have to close. (It's a weird place, but completely vegan, so it's really sad)

I try to update the Happycow listings every time there are new interesting eats, so that should help you get around.
