Hi everyone,

I'm travelling to Helsinki, Tallinn, and Reykjavik in June. We will be staying in apartments in all 3 cities and so will have full kitchens. Anyone have recommendations for great meals in vegan/vegan friendly restaurants or good grocery stores/markets. I'd also love it if you know of things we must do while there!

thanks!

Here's the Helsinki thread: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=27132

Zucchini is so so tasty: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_R ... nland.html
You have to ask them for the vegan selection, but they have something every day. It was the best meal I had in Finland.

In markets and shops, there are lots of tasty cookies and chocolate and Alpro soy products. I got ginger cookies and chocolate soy pudding at the grocery shop in the arrivals area of the Helsinki airport! And the berry jams are amazing.

Nepalese food is big in Finland, and there are quite a lot of good restaurants in Helsinki with curries and dumpling and such. They understand requests for "Lactose Free."

Also in Helsinki, take the boat out to Suomenlina and bring a picnic. And back in town make sure to go visit the church built into the rock hill. Helsinki is just marvelous.

And buy a cotton bag at Marimekko. Swoon.

I'm also seeking Reykjavik tips. I'll be stopping there on my way elsewhere and was wondering if you think I'd have time to see (or eat) anything interesting while I'm there. I land at 12:30 PM and depart again at 5 PM. Assuming all goes well, I think I should be out of the airport by 1:30 and need to be back by 4, leaving me 2.5 hours. Thanks!

We ate well in Reykjavik at the Laundromat Cafe and had good coffee and cakes at C is for Cookie (which is close to the church on the hill). We also enjoyed Graenn Kostur in a kind of 1970's style health foods way - it was a bit tricky to find, because it's at the back of a shop, so you have to walk round the corner and through the car park.

In terms of things to do, don't miss out on going to Gulfoss or the Blue Lagoon - both are amazing - but there wasn't anything vegan at either cafe there, so bring a packed lunch!

thanks, Ruby Rose. We are staying close to "the" church.

What did you order at the laundromat cafe? Did they "veganize" items for you?

They had a marked vegan sandwich thing which was excellent, and lots of accidentally vegan or easily made vegan other bits and pieces.

Dangerous advice. Lactose free is very not the same as dairy free in Finland. Without milk in Finnish is "maidoton".

Thanks for posting the link for the northernveg blog post. And thanks, fruitbat, for the advice. We're leaving in a little over 2 weeks and are very excited!

Thanks for the clarification--I should have been more specific. I was surprised by the number of keys and codes on menus (especially at the University of Lapland during my time there) indicating different restrictions for the food. It's true that none of these meant vegan or being totally free of milk, but there were so many that I noted that in many places the idea of certain ingredients being omitted from food was understood. And in the nepalese restaurants I visited, for example, in Helsinki, they clearly understood the request for non-dairy food.

Happy travels!
