You know, if I still had time and lived near the sorts of friends who would find a historical-order Doctor Who marathon appealing, I would probably actually do this.

Me too. Someone really needs to compile a historical Doctor Who guide.

And I'll echo what everyone else said. Start with series 1 (2005) and work your way up from there. For the special episodes, use Wikipedia. They list the episodes in chronological order. That's how I did it and now I'm an avid Whovian. Perhaps not as much as some, but still. You'll love the series. Even my girlfriend who until recently had never seen Star Wars, can't stand Star Trek and watches pretty much exclusively reality TV loves the show. You don't have to be a sci-fi geek to get into it.

My husband mostly married me because I knit him a Tom Baker scarf (He says that he thought he'd met his ideal woman when I sent him emails saying stuff like 'Do you want a season 12 or season 18 scarf?'). I am however not a classic Doctor Who fan, and was effectively a Doctor Who widow until Christoper Eccleston came along, and at which point I became a fan!

Anyway, I sent Mr. Surya a link to this thread, and he says that there is indeed a historical Doctor Who guide: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ahistory-Unauth ... 0975944665

I am now scared that he is going to insist that we watch Doctor Who according to mumbles guidelines. After we've finished watching the whole series chronologically. Which we are currently doing. Including the missing episodes (there are reconstructions).

(Story I shall tell my grandkids, who will be no doubt be disinherited if they are not Doctor Who fans: we used to live near Paddington station in London, and the husband once came home in a great flap because Russell T. Davies himself was waiting outside Paddington station. This was like witnessing God, and he didn't know what to do. I marched him back to The Creator himself, who then proceeded to give me a bear hug when I told him that he'd possibly saved my marriage by making me like the New Who)

Let's expand that, though. Can't stand ANY Star Trek? UNFORGIVEABLE!

But can't stand "Voyager?" That's cool. I'd be skeptical of anyone who claimed to be a Voyager fan and didn't have a history of head injuries or drug use.

Gah! My friend is very fond of Doctor Who indeed and after years of resisting (I wasn't a fan of the film, or the one recent-ish episode I caught) I asked him to pick the story he thought would make me like Doctor Who and get me into it, and he picked City of Death. I'm two episodes in.

I liked Voyager! She doesn't like TOS or TNG, but she liked the Abrams movie. I think we may have to watch Wrath of Khan or The Voyage Home and how that goes over. Anyone who can't laugh at Pavel Chekov asking strangers about nuclear vessels in a Russian accent on the streets of cold war era San Francisco doesn't have a sense of humor.

I kind of appreciate Voyager, but I do have a history of drug use, and I did have a confusion once.

I liked Voyager too! No head injuries... as far as I'm aware... although it would explain some things.

I guess this is the danger of a historical-order viewing: spoilers.

lavawitch, I'm super excited for you! I wish I could discover Doctor Who all over again. I showed some episodes to my mom, and she went from "Wait, there are aliens on this show?" to understanding most of it in just a couple of episodes. If she can do it, anyone can do it. Although I did watch with her and answer her questions. So if you want, you can fly me to your house, and I will watch it along with you. In fact, I think we should all have a big Doctor Who watching party. With snacks.

Ha! I was quietly thinking "why is he with her?" but chose not to comment. A certain degree of nerdiness is a requirement for me I think... but what applies to me does not necessarily apply to others. Voyager? OK as long as you keep me away from Neelix (no drug use, but a few concussions). I cannot deal with Deep Space Nine, though. And Phoenix? Totally with you on Babylon 5!

I like that I've somehow tricked Voyager semi-fans into revealing their drug and head injury history.

I'm taking notes.

I must say I got sucked into TNG and the Voyager while Who was on hiatus for that decade or so... If they ever release *all* of the existing Who episodes on DVD I'll never leave my couch.

I've watched this foolish show since the '70s (when it was on PBS in Boston) and I even had a dozen seasons taped on VHS at one point.

Anyway, if you're just getting started, the 2005 series is the best place to begin. Rose, the Parting of the Ways, and Blink are my favorites of this reboot. The entire season 6 last year was a disaster IMHO. Despite 30 years of obsessing over this show I was still lost!

I've just gone back to re-watch the Fifth Doctor stories (c. 1980) again on Netflix while I bide my time for the upcoming 50th anniversary extravaganza to begin this fall. All I can say is "Turlough, Turlough, Turlough!" Track down Planet of Fire if you can find it :)

I'll agree with this. It was really confusing. Hopefully I'll have time to watch it again before the new series kicks off. Maybe it will make more sense then.

Haha no trick. I'm pretty up front with this. I recently had a discussion of my non-druguse, actually.

osric, while anticipating the reboot I played Doctorin' the TARDIS a lot. My friends had no idea what I was on about. It was a bit hilarious. Last year we had a Doctor Who movie night with Doctor Who and the Daleks, The Five Doctors, and the 1996 Doctor Who movie.

I haven't watched series 6 yet... I'm not loving Matt Smith so I've been a bit slow with watching the last few. I do like Amy, though.

I actually found a lot of S6 to be a bit predictable. I also don't love Matt Smith, but he's grown on me. I really only watched for Rory, though.

That is the weirdest selection of Doctor Who you could really pick to watch.

Oh no, I made a mistakel It was actually Dalek's Invasion Earth: 2150 AD not The Five Doctors... but I've seen all of these at some point. And yes, a bit of an odd collection. We're like that sometimes. It was actually the first (and so far only) time I saw the 1996 movie. It's interesting because one of the Whovians and I have both seen a load of Doctor Who, but with surprisingly little overlap. I've seen the stories he hasn't and vice versa.
