On a more recent trip to Edinburgh, I saw both Bill Bailey and Dylan Moran, at different times. I was too shy to say hi to Bill Bailey, who was getting out of a taxi on the main drag. I saw Dylan Moran when I'd gone out to buy groceries near where I was staying - he was with his wife and kids, and scowled at me in a way that suggested that he did not want to be approached by giddy fans, so I kinda grinned and kept going. Oh well.
I forgot that I've seen Dylan Moran around a few times. He always looks a bit surly.
I ran up to him in a chip shop once when I was 17 or something and told him I thought he was pretty great. And he said "oh, well, err, um, I think you're pretty great too!" Heh.

I saw Chris Isaak outside a Borders in Boston last year. My friend was all, 'holy shiitake you guys, that was Chris Isaak', and I was like, 'oh, yeah, I thought he looked kind of familiar. I would be totally psyched about this if I were my mother'. And Boyfriend was all, 'Chris Isaak? Who's that? Is he from American Idol or something?'. And then our friend got really mad at us for being unenthused and making her feel old, so she stormed off somewhere for a while.

For some reason this is the most exciting thing I've read on this thread by far.
My friend was once drunk at a bar in New York City, playing darts, and this guy came up and tried to convince her to let him join the game. She said, "You know, you look a lot like Paul Rudd, except shorter." Yeah. It was Paul Rudd.

Paul Rudd is totally my celebrity crush! But I've never met him.
I met Arianna Huffington and Craig Newmark (craigslist inventor) last year at a work thing of Mr. Nummers. At London/Heathrow airport two years ago, Frances McDormant (sp?) got in line behind us, and asked me if she was in the right line for U.S. citizens. I told her no and she thanked me and left to find the right line. (I'm a U.S. citizen but I was traveling with Mr. Nummers with his UK passport so we were in the EU line.) Once I ate in a cafe where Emilio Estevez was also eating. Boarding a plane at Burbank airport years ago, I walked past Michelle Pfeiffer, who was seated in first class. Picking up my luggage from Burbank airport years ago, John Ratzenberger (the actor who played Clif Clavin on Cheers) was also waiting for his bags. Walking out of a restaurant in D.C. a few months ago, Russell Simmons passed us on his way in. I didn't know who he was but my friend did, and she said, "Hey, Russell!" He smiled and said hi to us.
Mr. Nummers meets way more famous people than I do. He met Pres. Obama when Obama visited Oregon a couple months ago. I was so jealous. He got to shake his hand and Obama said, "Thanks for coming." Then he saw Obama again last month at the White House Correspondent's Dinner, where he also met a ton of famous people and chatted for about ten minutes with Zach Galifianakis. He (Mr. Nummers) told Zach, "You look fatter in real life, it's like you're doing a reverse Marilyn Monroe!" which apparently made Zach double over with laughter and say that was the best thing anyone told him all night. The morning after the Correspondents Dinner, Mr. Nummers had brunch with Morgan Fairchild and about twenty other famous people/politicians.

Heehee, sorry! Those REALLY curious may inquire within. It's not super crazy or anything, I just decided I didn't want it posted in public.

I don't have great stories like some in this thread ("I only like you George"? Perfect!) But I suppose the main ones are:
In about '92 we were flying home from Auckland on the same flight as NKOTB (touring); the word had got around the plane, and a couple of them came back to economy to... I dunno, sign autographs? Wave? In my infinite young-teen wisdom, I decided to completely ignore them to show them they weren't really that great or anything; so while they were a couple of feet from me, I steadfastly kept reading my magazine until they left. Burn, right?
In London a few years ago, I was walking over the Millennium Bridge and passed a group of a few people; it took me half a second to think "Oh, isn't that Andrew Lloyd Webber?" and the next half second to think, "Six months in London and that's the celebrity sighting I get to take home?" I'm only about 80% sure it was him anyway. Yep, good story.
Shared a lift once with Kerry Packer, who for the non-Australians here was a media tycoon worth a few billion. It didn't really occur to me who it was until he got out at the really luxe floor.
Other than that, assorted Australian actors/musos/TV presenters/pollies/writers over the years; sometimes speaking, but more often just noticing them.

bell hooks comes to my college sort of often and spent this last March as a visiting professor-she basically came into different classes related to her fields and gave lectures, and then gave other less formal talks around campus. so I got to see her around a lot (it's a really small college ~800 students), and when I told her my name was a nickname, she made a comment about how her name is basically one as well and we talked about the power of nicknames. she's a really awesome person (as I'm sure other ppkers would expect)!
