i saw Singing in the Rain a few weeks back and loved it. now i really want a TCM themed movie night, but i know nothing about TCM movies.

any fans who would like to share their favorites? i remember seeing an old version of Peter Pan that i'd like to dig out, but besides from that, i am clueless.

I haven't had time to watch it this semester, but sometimes I like to browse their schedule and see what's good. It's a great way to expose yourself to classic movies fo sho.

meet me in st. louis and adventures of robin hood (the 1930s version with errol flynn) are two of my favorite movies to watch around the holidays.

TCM also has a website you can look through for ideas. They have their own IMDB style movie database.

i'll be sure to check them out; i'm trying to not watch too many silly tv shows and girly movies, or at least mixing it up with the classics.. haha.

What are TCM movies? If you mean just classic movies:

Anything with Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Kathryn Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, and Doris Day.

Some of my favorites are How to Marry a Millionaire, Let's Make Love, Niagra, That Touch of Mink, Pillow Talk, African Queen, Desk Set, Charade, Funny Face, and Roman Holiday.

I love old movies. I think that all of my DVDs that are not disaster movies or 007 are classics.

Ooh, and The Glass Bottom Boat. I love Doris Day. She is just so much fun. There is also one that I can never remember the title of, that is a total Charade/60s spy movie riff where she is involved in an espionage plot to steal hairspray. The wardrobe is to die for.

A bit later, but I also love me some Steve McQueen.

i'm loving the amount of suggestions so far. definitely going to make a list of movies i want to see.

We love TCM; I second the recommendation to just surf and check things out as they interest you. (Talking of classic films, queenofpainting, I've been meaning to compliment you on your avatar; Joan and I go way back!)

A few weeks ago they had a Hitchcock marathon and it was amazing! I honestly watched tv the entire day!

That's really sad that classic American movies got branded as Turner. He doesn't own them.

I just saw Roman Holiday for the first time recently. Very cute.

I honestly never thought I could be so moved by pure imagery in a silent movie. Boy, was I dumb. And thanks!

I love Billy Wilder lots.

Anything with Danny Kaye, especially The Secret Life of Walter Mitty or A Song Is Born (not to be confused with A Star Is Born, though that's alright). I'll also second the Cary Grant recommendation, especially The Philadelphia Story or His Girl Friday.

You Can't Take it With You. (Young Jimmy Stewart!)
Double Indemnity. (I also like almost anything with Barbara Stanwyck)
Casablanca. (Fo' sho)
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. (So sexy! Also, if you like Tennessee Williams, Steetcar Named Desire.)
Sullivan's Travels.
Philadelphia Story.
His Girl Friday.
Vertigo. (My favorite of Hitchcock's movies)
Rear Window. (Or is this my favorite Hitchcock?)

I have to add one that hasn't been mentioned yet:
City Lights. (Amazing. I cry every time.)

If you like Singing in the Rain try Funny Face. Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire. She's an empathicalist and he a fashion photographer, swoon. Perfect songs, perfect locations, enough funny bits and some great dancing including a 3-4 minute scene where he pretends he is a matador with his cape.

American film noir stuff not mentioned:

I would say that these are my favorite classic Hollywood movies (including super popular ones): The Wizard of Oz, Sunset Blvd, The Apartment, Psycho, To Kill a Mockingbird, Rear Window, Some Like It Hot, All About Eve, Rope, 12 Angry Men, Citizen Kane, Gone With the Wind, Strangers on a Train, It Happened One Night, Bringing Up Baby, Rebel without a Cause, A Streetcar Named Desire, Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, Double Indemnity, Lifeboat, and so on. I haven't seen that many as of now. We should have a foreign film discussion thread (it's pretty general, but it would be a lot simpler than creating several different threads).

Great lists! TCM is my favorite movie channel. Sunday Night Silents was a great introduction to the art of silent movies. The Four Horsemen Of The Apocalypse with Valentino is a winner. Camille with Valentino and Nazimova, and Valentino in The Eagle. Rudy!

Ha, you sounds like me. Vertigo used to be my all-time favorite, but Rear Window took the lead. I figure James Stewart + Grace Kelly = Ultra Win!

A few people have mentioned Rope: have you seen Swoon? It is also about Leopold and Loeb.
