When I was a kid I was a very casual baseball fan. In the mid-90s I was an ardent Mariners fan for a couple years, starting a season or two before they started playing well. Then I grew disenchanted with the whole business. We've just gotten back into it, and the team sucks.

I still love how baseball is alternately watching-paint-dry monotonous and biting-your-nails exciting.

You all have watched the Ken Burns baseball series, yeah? I just started rewatching it last night, and it's just so good. Of course, I started on the episode about baseball in the 70s, and it just makes me smile and cry. I can't really explain it. There's the 70s nostalgia, which is always so potent for me, and the kind-of-silly baseball-is-more-than-baseball tone of it all. It's just so fun to watch. The segment in praise of Brooks Robinson (set to Stevie Wonder's dirty-funky "Maybe Your Baby"), the segment on Hank Aaron's record-breaking home run, the segment on Rollie Fingers's handlebar mustache.

I can't explain it but thinking of baseball as this essentially harmless but paradoxically significant institution woven into the fabric of the culture... It just makes me not hate it. (It, being baseball and the culture.)

Footie, I have that saved to watch. Haven't dived into it yet but I'm glad to hear it's awesome! We love Ken Burns stuff. The West is amazing! My husband must have watched that one at least a dozen times.

We're new to Netflix, so I don't know: is this a common thing? The Ken Burns Baseball series is now just... gone? It doesn't show up in my "Continue Watching" list. It doesn't show up when I search. It's just gone.

Well, this sucks.

Yeah they do that. Normally on the 1st of the month they pull stuff and put new things up.

Do you have Hulu or a Roku? They might have it. I think I have it saved on the PBS app through my Roku.

Nope, no Hulu or Roku.

Darn it.

Check the pbs website. They have a pretty good selection. Or YouTube!

A bunch of episodes are indeed on YouTube. And so are some complete all-star games from the 70s!

We just watched an awesome baseball documentary on Netflix: The Battered Bas.tards of Baseball, about the Portland Mavericks, the only independent minor league ball club in the mid-70s. A really great movie. If you like baseball, watch this movie!

My god, but the Mariners are capable of playing shitty, shitty baseball.

My deep dark secret is that I have been a Cubs fan since I was a wee child growing up in Texas watching them on WGN.

The Mariners have now officially reached the "We hereby give up on this season" point. They just traded their best closer (Mark Lowe) for a bunch of minor leaguers.

Giving up before it's even August. That's pretty sad.

Wait'll next year!

The Mariners just traded my favorite player (Austin "Ajax" Jackson) to the Cubs.

Do they want me to give up on baseball again?

All I know is my team is doing awesome (The Blue Jays) because I keep hearing about their streak on the radio. About to look into it.

Yeah, they're on top of the AL East.

A game and a half ahead of the Yankee. (I just checked.)

Hi.

I'm freaking out. The Cubs are in the World Series for the first time since 1945, with a chance to win it for the first time since 1908. Dexter Fowler and Jason Heyward will be the first black Cubs to ever play in the World Series (technically Dex will be first, since he leads off) because baseball was still segregated in 1945. The whole city (and suburbs) are losing their minds right along with me (save the snotty Sox fans who can't be happy for their poor friends who have never won anything ever and are being jerks about it). Also, Kyle Schwarber who was AH-MAY-ZING and beloved last season got injured within the first few games of this season and he's been out since March. He flew to Cleveland yesterday and is expected to be on the gotdamn World Series roster as DH tonight. It's all too much. I am so excite-stressed.

Apologies to those who have followed me on twitter and my feed is just me flipping my shiitake about the Cubs. I've watched them on WGN since I was a wee little girl in Texas, and they were definitely a part of my choosing to move to Chicago. But yeah. FLIPPING OUT, YOU GUYS.
