anyone see the Simpsons last night?
ill admit that i was only half paying attention but part of it was Lisa was iron deficient (cause you know vegetarians HAVE to be iron deficient) and there was a whole big thing about vegetarians eating bugs for iron.
it was just ODD.
i know it's just a cartoon and i really dont remember how it ended up i was kinda bummed it was perpetuating the myth that vegs are anemic.
i felt like yelling at my tv LEAFY GREEN VEGETABLES!!!!

WHAT? really? I have it recorded (since it is pretty much my favorite show) but have not watched it yet.
"Lisa the Vegetarian" has to be one of my favorite episodes.

Lisa the Vegetarian was great, but it's older than some of the people on this forum.

I saw it too but I missed the last part where she reconciled what she decided. She was going from grasshopper eating to shrimp eating but then what happened? I saw in the end she freed the grasshoppers so she must have decided to stick with vegetarianism right? I loved when she said "But I promised Paul McCartney"

I was put off by it as well. I don't think it had a real ending? They let the crickets go. But did they address the iron deficiency?
It was just irritating.

my bf came home from watching this at his parents' house yesterday, he comes in all serious and this was our conversation:
him "Can I ask you something?" me "Yes" him "Have you ever heard of vegetarians eating bugs? Is that something that they do?"

I thought it was very annoying. Obviously she's iron deficient, right? And I could totally see people thinking vegetarians eat bugs now.
I used to be a die-hard Simpsons fan, back when "Lisa the Vegetarian" was the type of thing they were doing. I wish it could just die already.

I loved when she said "But I promised Paul McCartney" she had a dream where she was riding a grasshopper and a cricket came up next to them and Lisa said something about "but you cant feel pain" and the cricket pulled back its like carapace (?) and showed a beating heart and she woke up screaming and after that i spaced out so im not sure if they ever addressed the iron defiency

The general Simpsons-watching public is totally going to start thinking vegetarians eat bugs now. And that we are all anemic (perhaps more so than they did before). Thanks, Simpsons.

just watched it. that episode didn't bother me at all. basically, lisa had a health problem related to her diet and she had to figure out what she wanted to do about it. she felt pressure to eat bugs, but then ultimately decided it was a bad idea. that is, if we're going to actually take the simpson's seriously. i didn't think they were trying to make it seem like all vegetarians are anemic.
however, my iron pills are tiny!

I watched it last night, it wasn't so bad. She realized that vegetarians couldn't in fact, eat bugs without having horrific dreams about eating an hearts. So she stopped. Back to being a veggie!
Actually, I bet most people who go veggie have these kinds of struggles. I sure did at first. Hell, I still do sometimes. Not with bugs or anything, but there are some candies and stuff I miss. I actually thinks it was kinda good...she was tempted, then in the end she went back to the veggie side. How could you not? You promised Paul McCartney after all.

however, my iron pills are tiny! The best part of the show was the clinking noise the iron pills made.

Marge pissed me off the most. Instead of asking the doctor what she can cook to help out Lisa's medical problem she just prayed it was the diet, probably hoping Lisa would give up the "foolishness" of the vegan diet. What kind of a mother does things like that? And Dr. Hibbert should have just volunteered the info before giving Lisa iron pills, or at least sent mother and daughter to a dietician. (I know, it's just a cartoon, but *still*!!)
There *was* one good part of the episode - when Lunch Lady Doris winked and said something like *she* didn't listen to what Paul McCartney told *her* to do. It's good to see some of the old characters making reappearances.

What kind of a mother does things like that? *snip* Unfortunately, I think many parents/family are unsupportive of children deciding to be vegan/vegetarian and might wish this very same thing! Just look at some of the threads we have here, with parents asking their adult children to give up veganism for Thanksgiving and just eat some turkey already!
