This coming Monday they are cycling through Cambridge (the U.K. one in Cambridgeshire). 37 schools have closed, a number or roads are closed, no city buses that day, departments at the University hospital (where I work) are closed ... yikes ... it is a disaster. I am going into work but since there is no bus I will have to walk the 2.6 miles there.
My fav coffee shop in town says that local businesses do not expect to do much business on Monday as it will be so difficult to get into town.

Anne hoping it is not causing so much disruption if it is coming through your town ...

.....Why is the Tour de France starting in England instead of making a complete loop around France?

The Tour often starts in foreign countries as opposed to being entirely in France (eg in 2012 it started in Belgium, 2010 in the Netherlands) - and it isn't usually a complete loop of France, many stages are unconnected and it often zig zags all over the place, with riders flying / travelling to the next stage. The final stage is always (at least for a long time) in Paris, but other than that the route changes every year.

Yup - it's different each year. This year, they've added some cobbled sections, which will shake things up (literally!). There are features that appear each year like Mt. Ventoux and stuff, but the organizers keep it interesting by changing up the route.

Is anyone watching? Who are you rooting for?

I watched today! A bakery in my town shows the stage every morning. I picked the stage winner! And also won a shirt. Each time you pick the winner you get a point and the person at the end with the most points wins a prize. The only bummer is no vegan treats at this place. I'm not rooting for anyone in particular, I mostly watch so I can talk to my dad about it. And get up early and drink coffee with friends. Who are you rooting for Jordan?

I'm not quite sure! It actually looks pretty much like a lock for Froome to win. Dude is a robot and pretty boring to watch, unfortunately. I guess since Froome is so boring, I wouldn't mind seeing Contador take it from him. I don't even know who else is a remote possibility for the GC.

I would like to see Sagan win the green jersey, and I'd like Greipel to get some fire back and crush Kittel in some sprints. I hate Kittel.

I've just been using the feeds on the Cycling Fans site. I also have Hola, which is an IP blocker thing that can get you around feeds that are not supposed to be available in your country.

well Froome is out. I was round my parents earlier and my brother had it on ITV. complete washout...everyone was crashing. It looked lethal, and terrifying.

Man, I figured Froome was going to have a tough time on the cobbles today, but I didn't figure he'd pull out. Man, crashing suuuuucks. I crashed in a race last year, and while my only injuries were several patches of road rash (and my right shifter), I was forked up for a week after. Froome crashing yesterday and then twice today... ugh. I felt for the guy. He looked like he was in a lot of pain when he was trying to decide to continue or not.

That said, the race is sure going to be a lot more interesting now.

and to think, if Wiggins was on the squad you saying "a lot more interesting now" would never happened. "next Sky rider in line.."

no one wanted to see Froome have to bail, but I think we're all happy Sky won't make it another processional. so..yayish

Bummertown. :(

Ted King abandoned as well. Not that he was a factor in the race, but I know he really wanted to hang after being cut by 7 seconds last year.

How about that Tony Martin, though?

with Germany winning the world cup last night, he barely got a mention. not to mention the rest of Germany's dominance of stage results so far in general! kinda sucks. cycling is so unloved here :(

I've only been following the Tour for a couple of years, but with Contador now out, Peter Sagan is the practically the only rider I recognize. (Well, except Kittel, but I'm ignoring him.)

YES.

Also, Spartacus is out! :( Not like he was a GC contender or whatever, but he's a babe! And he makes things much more interesting on the non-mountain stages.

As for Contador, holy shiitake. Dude rode 15k and attached on a climb with a broken tibia!

totally, yeah. stoked that he made it inside the cut though. goin' out on his terms (assuming he doesn't start tomorrow)

I saw an interview with Sagan about not winning a stage yet. I like that guy a lot.

i'm watching! i didn't know this thread was here! hi!

this tour has been so wild, so many GC contenders and other 'big names' being out. i was heartbroken for cavendish on the first day, and a lot of other people have had a brutal tour as well. poor guys. i'm also bummed that cancellara pulled out, but i guess i understand.

i'm not sure why there is kittel hate; i like him fine and now i'm afraid to ask. heh. then again, i hate contador so maybe i'm just ms. unpopular opinion.

i guess now i'm kind of rooting for tejay?
