This celebrity death is the saddest and most unexpected to me.

Doves are crying today.

This has been an awful year in terms of talented people leaving our world.

My childhood was surrounded with music of Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson and Prince (yeah I know, my mom didn't pay attention to lyrics and I didn't understand anyway...). I still remember seeing Purple Rain at a drive in theater. When I got a CD player in college, I didn't have much money so I didn't buy many CDs but one thing I made sure to buy was a Prince boxed set, which I still own. I listened to those CDs so many times. I mean I'm only 40, people who were in their 20s when I was a kid should not be dead. Prince seemed to be free of things that plagued many other singers and those in the spotlight.

So this is definitely one of the most upsetting things because I figured if someone was going to go on forever it would be him. And after Michael and Whitney and then obviously others who I listened to years later... just done.

One of my first records was a shiny bright purple Purple Rain 45. My head is always so full of his music.

Linanil, that box set was one of the few CDs I bought in college too. I hounded Dr. Wax in Chicago until they got a used copy in that I could afford.

We didn't have the 45 but somehow my mom had access to various 45s including Thriller and Purple Rain. She'd bring them home for a while, then return them, then bring them home again (through her work or coworkers).

My friend Jill is currently DJ-ing a Prince set on vocalo.org and talking about his music and what it/he meant to her. It's wonderful. Jill is a national treasure.

My mother used to show up to pick me up from the library BLASTING Prince and dancing in the car. It was so embarrassing but I grew up listening to him. I can't believe so many big name and influential people have died so far this year. I also read that last night Chyna died.

So sad. Was he the most famous vegan? Maybe Bill Clinton.

Prince was young and still a force in this world!

Just yesterday I was watching a video of him absolutely shred the guitar in Purple Rain.

This year is terrible for losing people who culturally enrich our lives.

It's not even like these people were old. I don't think 57 is old!

One of my biggest regrets is not seeing him in concert. I was never much of a concert goer but it was a goal of mine.

And I have to say Sirus XM 80s on 80 must have the worst tribute in history... first fielding calls from people and then playing covers of Prince songs... like seriously?

They may not have rights to his music. I don't think any streaming music services do.

Oh, man, I'm so sad about this. I remember watching him play the guitar on a show once early in his career and being blown away by his playing. Whoa! Here's a guy to really watch, I'd thought.

I alway remember going to see Purple Rain back in 1984 with my sisters. Actually, I fainted that day after the movie and it was the only time I've fainted in my life which had nothing to do with Prince (I hadn't eaten) but yeah, seeing that movie and hearing the wonderful music was an experience I'll always remember having with my sisters. It's just one of those afternoons etched vividly on my brain. And we had gathered that day to celebrate Prince! RIP.

So unexpected, genuinely saddened by this. Prince was a musical genius and I listened to and loved his music from a very young age. So very sad.

I really can't believe it! What an insane year for music. The Oatmeal's tweet about how George R.R. Martin must be writing 2016 is the only thing that made me smile. I'm so sad I never got to see him in concert.

That's only four years older than me. And I am nowhere near ready to go.

He was a huge part of my life when I was in my twenties/early thirties. So sad.

Sirius XM started playing some songs but clearly not enough but there is a station playing all Prince
http://www.thecurrent.org/listen

I may have to stop looking at FB because it is just a bit too much.
