Yes, I'm embarrassed - well not so embarrassed to admit - I was only 11 when I read the series. Okay I'm going to look at the link - I hope it's true to period.

ETA Okay, that looks so forked up, and I want to see it too - I think I'll fast forward through the incest parts though - but yeah, looks wonderfully trashy and deliciously good.

SALLY DRAPER NO. I might watch it if I can find an industrial sized bottle of brain bleach.

Is that book/series actually readable beyond middle school?

If our parents had known what we were reading...

VC Andrews is one of the main reasons I tend to scoff at the Twilight alarmists. We all turned out ok, didn't we? Edward and Bella are the epitome of a healthy relationship compared to Cathy and Whatshisname.

I read it this year after I kept seeing it mentioned on Jezebel. I finished, but opted not to continue the series. Things were just *too* ridiculous.

I read my first VC Andrews book when I was 18 or 19, and then I got a job where I had to assist a woman in a wheelchair at her job which translated into a lot of reading, and a lot of .25 cent paperbacks.

I think i've only read three complete series and one or two others, though.

ANYWAY. Stoked as fork. I'd be more stoked if it was a miniseries of the whole set of books.

A miniseries would be EPIC!

Also, I was 10 when I read these, if I saw a ten year old reading it now I'd be totally appalled.

Yeah, I was around 11 when I started reading them. I went back and reread a few last year, and I couldn't believe I was so young when I read them the first time! And I got my first VC Andrews book from church! The ladies club at church had a little display of used books for sale for 10 cents each. I picked up one called My Sweet Audrina because I thought the cover looked cool, having no idea how weird and twisted the book would be. Now I wonder which old church lady donated that one! I got the 2nd book in the Flowers in the Attic series from the library, but couldn't find the first book. So I watched the movie version (the one that came out in the 80s I think?) on tv, and there was no incest in it at all. I was so confused because the 2nd book definitely mentioned the Chris/Cathy sex incident that had happened in Flowers in the Attic, but it never happened in the movie. I'm guessing this movie will stay closer to the source material, because it's on Lifetime. (Which, ew. But I know I'm probably going to watch it anyway.)

I cannot believe so many of us read them at 10years old! I read the whole series, but nothing else by her. Yikes! I think it honestly did screw me up a little!

I gave my VC Andrews books to my mum to read after I'd finished - she loved them. In hindsight it was really inappropriate reading for an 11 year old.

You guys have sucked me in! I just got off the phone with my tv provider and subscribed to Lifetime. I know my mum-in-law would have read these (she loved pulp-fiction) I'm going to ask my husband if on a lazy summer afternoon back in the day, maybe out of boredom he may have picked it up and had a leaf through. Oh there's nothing like a bit of trash made for tv movie to chase away the winter doldrums.

ETA holy man this lifetime channel is full of crepe! I've not had the channel before, I don't think it's been available in Canada until recently. Ah well, it's less than 5 bucks, I'll just cancel it once FITA has recorded.

unless anyone can recommend something else worth watching on Lifetime. Normally FITA isn't my sort of thing, but I want to watch it to please my inner 11 year old who would have loved it.

Project Runway. Maybe. It's more worth watching when the ever excellent Tom & Lorenzo blog does recaps.

(For the uninitiated, TLo are kind hearted bisque-y fashion bloggers that got their start ripping on Project Runway. They have rules like only making fun of celebs who are doing appearances where they've had armies of makeup artists, stylists, and piles of free clothes, and they shut down any sort of body snark faster than the speed of light. They are really awesome and positive and fun, not to mention hysterically funny.)

Yeah, we were churning through the FitA series and My Sweet Audrina in 7th & 8th grade. While I sort of shudder to think of 10 year olds reading it, I don't think it would have been quite so enjoyable any older than when I read them. I guess I was probably 17 when the movie came out, though; all I remember is my sister's boyfriend loudly announcing to the theater that he'd "smoke a bowl with that old lady!" I'll watch the Lifetime movie... you know, for old times sake.

I'm pretty sure I was 9 or 10 when I first read Flowers in the Attic - I know I read more in the series but I'm pretty sure they got progressively worse. I think the later ones were ghostwritten, too? Or maybe that was the My Sweet Audrina series? Which may or may not have also had incest? I don't remember.

I kind of wish I had cable now, I would watch the heck out of this!

I think VC Andrews actually wrote My Sweet Audrina (which was a stand-alone book), all or most of the Flowers in the Attic series, and part of one other series that I can't remember... everything since then has been ghost-written, and there are about a zillion books written under her name. I see new ones at the drugstore every so often, so I guess kids are still buying them! Sometimes I read the descriptions on the back covers, and 90% of them seem to be about girls with horrible abusive relatives, so I guess the formula still works.

Ooo, I wonder what I am thinking of that made me think My Sweet Audrina was part of a series? Best guess: probably the other series, obviously, ha.

They're like the Babysitter's Club books, only scandalous.

The other series she wrote was Heaven, those were my favorite. I can only dream of a lifetime miniseries of those books!

The only reason I haven't read more V.C. Andrews is not being able to find them for a quarter. I'd read so many more. One of my favorite things to do is explain the plot to every V.C. Andrews series to people (because really, they're all the same at the core) and watch as their expressions become increasingly horrified whenever I say 'and then there's MORE incest...'

Lifetime has some newer show about witches that's supposed to be good, but I didn't catch it.

Well she had a pretty simple formula to follow but after her death, they kept churning the books out. I believe I read a long time ago that the early ghost written books were based on drafts/notes but then after that, they just followed the formula.

I was a little late to Flowers in the Attic - I remember someone doing a book report on it in 6th grade (nice choice!!) and I hadn't heard of it. But then I read them all later. I'll definitely watch the Lifetime movie!
