I don't think I can tell.

I'm taking about the real one.

Not the not-real one.

(This assumes the real one is real.)

I think it has the potential to be the next big thing.

I think many people would love to be able to get an answer to a question simply by sitting in a chair and asking the question out loud. Sort of like Star Trek. It is appealing to the alternative of getting up and going to your computer, or dealing with a tiny device like a phone.

It's not a new idea. It's been out there for years. Amazon just made one without the ears and personality:

It's a bit weird, because obviously it would be listening all the time in order to hear your voice commands. That seems creepy to me!

I like the idea of it but the advert makes me feel sick.

That ad kind of makes it seem like that family needs assisted living.

My favorite part is when the kid is like, "Play rock music!" and the mom is all whaaaaaat.

I think it's cool. This is the Star Trek future. If you need to know something, you can just ask the air around you and it'll give you an answer. It's making information more accessible. It does neat things that can be replicated with a smartphone or computer.

I'm also a cynic, and this is only as useful to you as it is to informing Amazon of your habits. It's so (relatively) cheap because it's probably all feeding into an advertising profile.

And I can put on my tinfoil hat and point out that any constantly on and listening device is another ear for three letter government agencies.

I requested an invite. For $99, it's competitive with bluetooth speakers, assuming it's halfway decent as a speaker.

The main advantage Amazon has over companies selling similar devices is that you can be sure Amazon will still be around next year, and they'll take a reputational hit if the voice recognition doesn't work well.

I like the concept behind Jibo, personally.

Next thing you know they'll be drinking alcoholic beverages, using curse words, and skipping church on Sundays!

This, I want to choose my own word. Either Mother (from watching Alien too much) or Hal.

I was thinking "Slave", from Blake's 7, but I guess I don't want to have to explain that to people. So I'd probably just go with "Hey Shitface".
