These are my favorite authors:

1. Phil K. Dick
2. Herman Hesse
3.Tom Robbins
4. Franz Kafka
5. Fyodor Dostoyevsky

I'm kind of bummed they're all men. Can anybody suggest some women who write similar type of stuff that I can love and get up there in the top 5?

I really like Jeannette Winterson - lots of anachronism, gender ambivalence, sex.

What I came here to suggest! Most of my other favourite female writers write non-fiction, or the fun trashy reads I like, I'll have to think about it, but I think Atwood is probably the most talented contemporary author, regardless of gender. I've also been really meaning to read more A. S. Byatt.

EDIT: Almost forgot Ursula Le Guin!

Yup.

Also, Margaret Laurence, Toni Morrison, Carol Shields, Sylvia Plath, Jhumpa Lahiri, Camilla Gibb, Miriam Toews, and Zadie Smith. You probably have heard or read most if not all of those, but they're all female authors I've read and enjoyed, for what it's worth.

This thread made me realize I have probably never read a book by a female author besides Frankenstein. Thats sort of sad.

Seconding Carol Shields, Lorrie Moore, and Flannery O'Connor. For newer authors, I have my eye on Kiran Desai, Dalia Sofer, and Tana French.

Another vote for Margaret Atwood. Oryx and Crake is one of my all-time fave books.

Louise Erdrich is good, I've enjoyed pretty much everything I've read of hers (even though I had to read some of her books for a Native American Literature course. You know an author is good when they get through you having to dissect their work!).

I liked Ruth L. Ozeki's My Year of Meat and several of Amy Tan's books. I know this is an obvious choice but I really enjoyed most of Jane Austen's books too.

Of your list I've only read Herman Hesse and that was a long time ago, so I can't really say how likely you are to like any of these authors.

I had the same realization a couple years ago, and I got into reading mostly female authors for a while. It was nice. I would wander through the Harold Washington and just grab books with female-sounding authors, I found a lot of good books that way.

Some of my favorites have already been mentioned; Octavia Butler, Margaret Atwood, Ursula le Guin, Jeanette Winterson, Jhumpra Lahiri, and Flannery O'Connor are up there. I've only read one book by Zadie Smith (White Teeth) and Arundhati Roy (The God of Small Things) but I definitely want to read more, they were both great.

Also, Virginia Woolf, who's more literary. Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan books are a very enjoyable sci-fi series. I really enjoyed Ash, by Malinda Lo, and Hold Me Closer, Necromancer, by Lish McBride. Yep.

I know I'm going to think of more once I post this. It's one of my favorite topics.

ETA: +1 everyone dropscone mentioned! Jane Austen for life!

Based on your list, Margaret Atwood and Zadie Smith sound like good suggestions. And maybe also Lydia Millet or Banana Yoshimoto?

Jennifer Egan! And I'm glad to see some Doris Lessing and Margaret Atwood love. Also, Marion Zimmer Bradley and Toni Morrison. For poetry I like Anne Sexton and Dorothy Parker.

I really liked 'Look at me' but I never got around to finishing 'a visit from the goon squad' for some reason. Got about a third of the way through. Is it worth persevering?

In the same vein as some of Atwood's stuff (dystopic, social commentary, etc) I really enjoyed Ninni Holmqvist's "The Unit".

Add another vote for Margaret Atwood. The woman is amazing and the range of her writing is phenomenal - you're almost guaranteed to find something you like. She's written everything from poetry to dystopian sci-fi to historical fiction to literary fiction. She's absolutely incredible.

I'm also a big fan of Jhumpa Lahiri and Kiran Desai - The Inheritance of Loss is one of my five favorite books of all time.

Okay, let's see.

First off, I'm going to throw in ANOTHER PUSH for other people to read Pamela Zoline's "The Heat Death of the Universe." I don't think it's in print any more, so here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/54726049/Zoline-Pamela-The-Heat-Death-of-the-Universe. Read it. It's short and it's very very good.

Onward:

Patricia Anthony writes SF that Philip K. Dick would be proud of-- I think he's a a pretty obvious influence on her earlier books and short stories, but around the time she gets to _God's Fires_ she develops even more of a distinctive voice of her own. Also dark dark dark dark dark. Be prepared to be very very sad. From the list of authors above, I think you'll DEFINITELY dig her.

Connie Willis has a pretty distinctive voice as well. Her best books are the ones she writes around time travelling historians poking around various ancient times. Try _The Doomsday Book_ for a visit to the plague era and _To Say Nothing of the Dog_ and _Fire Watch_ and the connected _Blackout_ and _All Clear_ for visits to the Blitz in England. She also likes to write 'em sad. _The Doomsday Book_ made me cry. :( (But it was SO GOOD. I'd start with that.)

I'd like to assume you know Ursula K. LeGuin, but if not, MAN you have some good stuff ahead of you. You can't go wrong with Urusula LeGuin.

Jane Yolen writes some badass fantasy fiction. She strays farther from the sorts of authors you list but is well worth reading. Similarly, Zilpha Keatley Snyder's _Below the Root_ books are some young-adulty goodness.

Karen Joy Fowler's _Sarah Canary_ is probably SF as well. I can't explain it, so just read it.

Not as good as Anthony or Willis or the others, but still pretty good, is Rebecca Ore. _Time's Child_ is another time travel novel. I haven't read anything else from her, but this at least is worth putting somewhere on the reading list. But read Anthony and Willis first.

I want to like Margaret Atwood more, but she has a really weird and annoying relationship to genre fiction. I'm going to link to a review:

http://www.strangehorizons.com/reviews/2011/10/in_other_worlds.shtml

So, yeah. And while I tend to like her fiction, her writing doesn't bear a lot of resemblance to Philip K Dick or the Existentialists. She usually heads for a different area of the SF spectrum than PKD or Patricia Anthony.

Anyway, seriously, go read yourself some Patricia Anthony. From the list of authors you list as favorites, I think you will dig her like whoa.
