If anyone else is into true crime (I know you're out there on the PPK), I've gotten into some really fascinating podcasts lately:

-Sword and Scale: weekly-ish, free full back catalogue, also has a great website with more articles & content. Very thoroughly researched and professionally presented.

-True Crime Garage: tonally opposite to Sword & Scale, but just as well-researched and I think they still manage to show respect for victims/survivors/families. It's literally just two guys drinking beer and talking murders in their garage in Cleveland. They're probably not dudes I would hang out with in real life, but somehow their podcast strikes that perfect balance of friendly/approachable and professional.

-Casefile: this one is a labor of love but you can tell the guy has really been making improvements lately, buying better equipment, getting sponsors, etc. It's out of Australia so a lot of the crimes are ones I've never heard of here in America, although he covers crime in other parts of the world, too. The only drawback is the guy has a really thick accent and it kind of grates on me after a while (but that's just a personal preference).

-Unsolved Murders: True Crime Stories: this one is fairly new and I'm still on the fence about it. It's every other week and the hosts and a range of voice actors explore a historic unsolved murder through both narration and old-timey radio play-style vignettes.

Yessssssss thank you!

I'm listening to Unsolved Murders too. I am also on the fence but I think a lot of people who are into the radio show style would like it. Just not a style I am used to.

I will definitely check out the other three.

Ugh, I have finished Sword & Scale finally, and I'm finding nothing else is quite the same.

Anyone listening to My Dad Wrote a Porno? It was recommended on NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour a few weeks (months?) ago and it is just amazing.

Um, no, but I think I might need to hear more about it. It sounds pretty amazing.

Here's a long read on the Dee-Dee and Gypsy Rose Blanchard case, which Sword and Scale covered so well: https://www.buzzfeed.com/michelledean/d ... .otNwgrAnb

tl;dr: Woman with Munchausen by Proxy grooms her daughter to be a malingerer from a tender young age, daughter eventually grows tired of the ruse, makes a boyfriend online, and kills the mother. Cops are in a panic because this woman is dead and her presumed profoundly disabled daughter is missing. But the daughter is not at all who she seems. Fascinating stuff!

I finally started Sword and Scale after reading that link, Erika. I am super loving this podcast, it is fascinating.

I have been enjoying True Crime Garage too. It is not as wholly engrossing as S&S but they're enjoyable to listen to.

Glad you like them! The TCG guys' strong midwestern accents crack me up. Lately they've really been going strong on these advertisements for 'brawls' (bras).

Ok the bra ads are a bit too much. Great to know the captain endorses it but TRY WEARING ONE BUDDY.

(though I did check out their website and may give them a go so I should probably shut my damn mouth)

Ooooh, good to know! I've been sucked into the Charles Manson episodes, but only downloaded those and wasn't sure if it was worth subscribing to others. Sometimes the host's over-enunciation bugs me, but her research is amazing.

Ooh, I'm re-listening to the Manson series now. It's the first ones I listened to of that podcast, and I was REALLY irritated at first with how she speaks, but I guess I just got used to it and it doesn't bother me anymore.

I did laugh when she was talking about the "Straight Satans" but pronounced "Straight Say-dens."

Ohhh, thanks for the Sword and Scale suggestion. I've already listened to all of the Criminal feed so this will be a welcomed addition!

I've been solidly plowing through Sword and Scale (and How Did This Get Made, you know, for juxtaposition) and peppering in my "usual" podcasts, and I get so excited for Sword and Scale every time it starts. Every one is so fascinating and well done.

A lot of it is really, truly, deeply disturbing. One episode so far has come with a warning that you may become physically ill listening to it. That one I managed ok but there was a couple of others that were extremely difficult to listen to in parts

The teenage girl in Japan? That one was pretty tough for me to listen to. The Christian puppeteer one was also pretty intense but at least it was all internet braggadocio, there's no way those crimes were actually committed.

The one with the digital voices doing the internet chat, involving pedophilia and cannibalism. I didn't find it that bad personally but they gave some really heavy warnings at the beginning.

Ok got to the Japanese girl episode of Sword and Scale a week ago. Yeah, that was really intense.

I've listened to everything, guys. I started My Favourite Murder, so true crime but not super researched and its "lighter". It's fine as light background noise.

I kind of just want to listen to all of Lore again, or maybe The Black Tapes. Something about Lore in particular is so soothing.

I need something new. Apparently You Must Remember this is the way to go? And maybe My Dad Wrote a Porno? Anything else I need to be listening to? I gave Last Podcast on the Left but I'm not feeling it.

Everyone RAVES about it but I was turned off after about 5 minutes. I was listening to the Robert Lake/Charles Ng episode (I find the case extra fascinating because my dad went to high school with Lake), and the hosts read from a statement given by Charles Ng about what he was like growing up, and they read it in this forking racist "me so solly" fake Chinese accent, and I was just done.

OK, this is not a podcast so much as a long read but since we've got so many true crime fans in this thread I wanted to drop it here- this is an amazing mystery from 2010 that I only learned about approximately a month ago, and it was literally announced yesterday that it has finally been solved.

tl;dr: In 2010, a woman named Lori Erica Ruff killed herself. Her husband found documents in a safe that indicated she had changed her name from Becky Sue Turner in 1988. Only problem is, Becky Sue Turner died in a house fire in 1971 at the age of two. So who is this woman, really?

Both pieces from the Seattle Times:
2013: Who was Lori Erica Ruff?
2016: Lori Erica Ruff identity resolved

Apropos, if mods think we should have a separate true crime thread and enough people are interested, I am all for it.

WHOA I can not wait to get home and read that. I'm totally down for a true crime thread.

I started to listen to Sword and Scale this week and it's engrossing. Thanks for the suggestion for my long hours on the road. The depth is satisfying.

I listened to a lot of You Are Not So Smart this summer. I like that one a lot. I've also just discovered Two Dope Queens, so great.

Yes, um, I got to episodes (I think) 5 and 6 of Sword and Scale, and ummm....I need to talk about this with someone.

Can we do that behind spoilers maybe?

Spoiler: show
To be specific, this is the two episodes about Larry King (not the CNN guy) and the child prostitution ring where GH Bush was involved??? What the WHAT. ....And maybe there's some kind of wrap-up that's gonna make me less befuddled, as I haven't finished the second ep yet, but will finish it tomorrow.

Hollie, you will not be less befuddled.

I think there's a netflix doc about that case, and I also saw a special about it on tv the other day. That case is BANANAS.
