Michael Parkinson and Rod Hull (this is probably one for the Brits). Parkinson and Grace Jones was pretty good too.

for pure holy-shit-how-does-she-do-it i have to include that time Terri Gross interviewed Gene Simmons and it turned into a horror show. It was so awkward *I* was sweating.

Did anyone see the Katie Couric/Chris Rock/Jerry Seinfeld interview from right after 9/11? It ends with Chris Rock saying "your rich too Katie"
I hate her to this day because of it!

Harmony Korine on Letterman: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4JIkmzWfn0
If you watch the Letterman interview from two years later, it's even funnier to see the difference. He's not allowed back anymore because he was involved in an altercation with Meryl Streep.

There are a few listed here I'd really like to check out if I could find them on YouTube.

I like David Byrne interviewing himself

and I usually enjoyed Andrew Denton's interviews on Enough Rope. The interview with Jerry Seinfeld is on YT.

Has anyone watched the Frost interview with Nixon?

Loved Marc Maron interviewing Louis CK on what the fizzle. Also Maron's interview of Carlos Mencia with the follow-up interview. He interviewed Mencia, and then talked to a bunch of comedians about Mencia stealing jokes and genrally being no-good, and then called him to ask about the shiitake he'd heard, and Mencia drove from the airport straight to Maron's to talk about people's accusations. I didn't like what the fizzle at first, but now that I've listened to more, he's actually a great interviewer.

In a completely different direction, I also love this interview with Keri Smith.

I just listened to it. Disgusting. I agree, how does she do it.

Conan O'Brien interviewing Courtney Thorne Smith while Norm MacDonald was still there. It's still funny.

i can't believe no one's mentioned Katie Couric interviewing Sarah Palin. I mean, that was the best shiitake ever, I was cracking up and screaming, "YES!" the whole time, because I was genuinely afraid that she might actually become vice president before the election, and after that interview I couldn't imagine enough people could possibly still be convinced she isn't an idiot to make that happen.

I don't know if this would really count, because it's not an interview per se, but the segment on This American Life from July of 2008 that Dan Savage was on talking about his son being against gay marriage initially was amazing.
