Okay, so I'm reaaally late with this one. I'll blame living in Germany ...

Have you read the book? If not: Why? If you did: How did you like it? Is it worth reading? I'd love to hear your opinions as I still keep adding books to my Summer reading list.

Go to smartbitchestrashybooks.com or dearauthor and snag some recommendations for *good* erotica.

I read them because my coteacher kept raving. Blech. They are Twilight knockoffs and very badly written. You can do better. Seriously, the writing quality is painful.

Haha, sorry! I haven't read any erotica yet (don't think I was prude, I just haven't) so I was actually surprised to find out Shades of Grey was just that after hearing several bloggers mention it.

Well, you don't want to start the genre with a horrible example! I'd offer a recommendation, but I'm not very familiar with the genre. The two sites I listed above are fabulous for all romance genres. Neither site tolerates bullshiitake or bad writing.

I haven't read it yet because I read the back of one of the books and was kind of appalled by the storyline. And I'm totally cool with erotica! It just looked like a bad story. I wouldn't judge anyone for enjoying a good trashy quick read, though, and if that's what you need, get down with those shades of gray!

It is Twilight fanfic that was slightly altered so that it could be sold. Sarah at Smart bisques, Trashy Books rated it as Did Not Finish. It's not something mysterious and naughty; I can give you a list of 100 erotic romances with similar spicy content. (If someone wants a list of read-alikes and is embarrassed to ask in public, just PM me.)

Many of the same forked up ideas about gender, relationships, and boundaries that are in the Twilight books are present here. Dear Author compared the fanfic (Master of the Universe) to Fifty Shades. They even used TurnItIn which is hilarious. (It rated the two stories 89% alike.)

(Here's another secret - it's not that kinky.)

Okay -
Here's Sarah from Smart bisques on Kirkus Reviews with a list of read alikes: http://www.kirkusreviews.com/blog/roman ... e-erotica/

Check out books by: Joey W. Hill (Please note that Joe Hill is Stephen King's son and writes horror novels. They are not the same person.), Eden Bradley, Lilli Feisty, Lorelei James, Anya Bast, and Shayla Black all write books you might enjoy. They are all erotic romances so they contain your happy ever after ending. If you want something that is about a BDSM relationship or dark erotic tale, some with a domineering man, but without the HEA ending, try Never in the Face by Ariel James, Damage by Josephine Hart, or The Story of O.

Here is a list of Dark Erotic from Goodreads: http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1725 ... a#10339023
Here's a list of SugarKink (very light BDSM, more light kink really) erotic romances from Goodreads: http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/11847.SugarKink_BDSM
(Goodreads is a far superior site than Amazon.com to find honest reviews of books.)

Ellora's Cave is a publisher of erotic romances including some pretty hot BDSM stories. They also publish boy/boy and girl/girl erotic romances.

Sherrilyn Kenyon, Laurel K. Hamilton, Lora Leigh, Angela Knight, and Kelley Armstrong all write paranormal romances with erotic content.

Zane, Omar Tyree, Anna J., and Eric Jerome Dickey are all also possibilities for erotic romances with African-American characters.

I've heard that Laurel K. Hamilton's stuff is AWFUL but that's second-hand so you don't necessarily want to go by my anti-recommendation. Just be warned.

Readers Advisory is different than book reviewing. I'm not a huge sci fi fan but I would be able to put a book in someone's hand that I thought they would enjoy. I loathe Tolkien but I could find someone a read alike for it.

So here is a question, are these erotica or romance? I could see myself reading somewhat erotic fiction but not romance (swash buckling good guy sweeps woman off her feet or something).

What I'd want is a good story that doesn't focus on sex or romance but has some mixed in and possibly a little dark.

LKH is great up through Obsidian Butterfly.

Kenyon isn't very racy. Her books are are fun, mindless fluff, but have grown stale.

Linanil, it sounds like you might like some urban fantasy. Maybe Stacia Kane? She has some romance and sort of happy endings, but I wouldn't consider her straight romance.

Romance is a little bit more varied than that. Think mandatory happy ending with a love story at the center. They have changed a lot since the 80's.

I tried to read shades of grey cause a coworker sent me a free copy and yuck! I didn't like it at all. I quit maybe 75 pages in? Annoying and just bad writing. I like trashy fluff (loved twilight) as much as the next person, but this was just not good. Not my fantasy especially.

Here is Stacia Kane's website: http://www.staciakane.net/books/

I've only read her Ghost books. Chess Putnam is a really intriguing main character--for one thing, she is a drug addict. How Kane handles this is one of the strengths of the series. They are well-written books, and her world building is entertaining and creative.

You might like some LKH, at least up through the point where she went nuts and forgot to include things like plot in her books. Also the point where every catastrophe is solved by everyone having sex with everyone else. I'd dip a cautious toe into the first book (was it Circus of the Damned?) and see how it goes.

I'll try to think of some more. I overdosed on urban fantasy and vampires a couple years ago.

Vantine nailed it. There are so many types of books that fall under romance: the only thing they really have in common is a happy ending. I like happily ever after. I always hated those stupid books where the dog dies at the end.

Linanil, have you read Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series?

This isn't my thing but what about P.C. Cast, Kelley Armstrong, or Kim Harrison?

The Gilbert Gottfried video is hilarious. I laughed so hard. When he goes "claim your asparagus" I nearly puked from laughing.

J.R. Ward should be somewhere on this list of erotic/vampire/suspense. I really have enjoyed her Brotherhood series. (Haven't read the newest one that came out in March yet, as I wait for them to come out in paperback.)
