I don't get "stans" in general. Maybe it's the age talking.

Do entertainment companies pay people to pump up stuff on the internets? I would assume so.

I don't know. I think it's just teens + tribalism.

Did you see the dance practice video?
If that is their debut song... no thank you.

It was a Rhianna song.

(Or... is there another dance video?)

Considering I don't know from American pop...

Which begs the question, why do a tiny snippet of someone else's work to get fans hyped?

And I may just be jaded with YG right now.

Blackpink's debut videos are out.

Boombayah

휘파람 (Whistle)

I'm a total old, so my opinion is irrelevant (and probably wrong), but these don't seem so special to me. After 5 years as trainees (and for being the second coming of 2NE1) they should be producing something amazing.

The videos are flashy and fun, and the girls are pretty and sassy, but... I mean... Who cares?

I agree with you.
I don't hate Boombayah, but it wasn't love at first listen either.
Someone on a kpop forum said "If I wanted a female IKON, well, now I have one"

And producing a slick video, well SM can do that too. (I mean... EXO, come on!)

Those two videos have 5,000,000 views (total) in less than 24 hours.

I don't know. The videos are growing on me. I still don't understand the group's "concept" (you know what I mean). It seems like "generic brassy and sexy," but the songs are catchy.

And I don't want to dismiss these kids just because they're the beneficiaries of the complete mishandling of 2NE1.

(I really don't understand the Korean music business. 2NE1 was hugely successful, with a long string of hits, so let's just let them languish and... fizzle out. You've got CL's probably-never-going-to-happen, credibility-wrecking US debut, Bom's eternal scandal, for which Korea might never forgive her, and Minzy's fed-up departure. And just like that, it's over. I know YG is still saying they're going to have a comeback, but I can't imagine anyone caring at this point.)

(The name Black Pink still bugs me—as it's a blatant 2NE1 rip-off—and I don't like Rosé's "swimming on the floor" dance move, because that was Minzy's.)

I am of the opinion that YG has lost his mind. Because the difference in the handling of Big Bang vs. 2NE1.

I also think that, just like in American music, there is a lot of favoritism. (Again... looking at you, YG).

New Vixx.
It's weirdly catchy. I've been singing it all day.

In 2NE1-adjacent news:

Minzy's solo debut is imminent:
http://www.vlive.tv/video/12500

CL's so-called American debut (even though it's her third solo release since she started working and recording and schmoozing in the US) is released tomorrow.

And in Black Pink news: their first two releases ("Whistle" and "Boombayah") were number 1 and 2 on the Billboard world charts. Or something.

Oh, CL. Look, I know I'm an uncool old, and CL isn't trying to reach me. And I'm sure I don't know what's what in contemporary music. But she looks like such a tourist here, trying so hard to project an image that comes across as totally false. (Singing about drinking 40s and getting with shorties? In 2016?) I'll give her this, though: she seems serious about making a break from her Korean fans. Brace yourself for all the "druggie" talk headed her way. I'm also bummed out by the way she seems to want to reduce herself to "sexy Asian woman" in this video.

In spite of everything, I do think the chorus is catchy.

The Black Pink kids can actually dance. This "Whistle" dance practice clip is way better than I would have thought.

And I didn't know SPICA could really sing.

I don't get this. In this recent Minzy video (like a photo shoot BTS), she looks... different. She looks like pre-plastic surgery Minzy. Almost like her new face just... wore off. Hurray!

I follow her on instagram and one of her pics last week (I think) was just so pretty. It was like Minzy from the way back days but all grown up.
In other words, she looks great and I hope she redebuts (Whatever) very soon.

I'm a little apprehensive about it. I want her to do well, of course (I'm a Minja from way back), but I just don't know what to expect.

I just started a book called The Birth of Korean Cool. It's partly about hallyu and partly about how S. Korea has transformed itself into a global economic powerhouse in such a short time. Interesting stuff!
