Okay this one was a fairly popular game. It had a branching storyline. If you failed a mission, you still kept playing. Fail too many though, and the chances of seeing the best ending drop pretty quick!
I feel like I played this one at a friend's house. Your mention of multiple endings brings back memories. But I can't remember what it was called.

Here are a couple more hints: it was a PS1 game, and it was one of the first to use dual-shock controls, despite the fact that there was no "shock" in dual-shock. It was just a revision of the original PSX controller that added twin joysticks and bigger grips. Force feedback was added later. I still have my shockless dual-shock, because the slightly larger grips make it one of my favorite controllers.

I guess I pick games that are too hard to guess? That was Colony Wars. It was a space dogfighter for consoles. It came on 2 discs. It had a true branching storyline. A voice actor who sounded like James Earl Jones did narration. It was glorious. It was developed by Psygnosis, one of my favorite PS1 era developers, who recently shut down. Fun fact: the canon ending is the one you get for failing in the last act.

The game doesn't sound familiar but my game playing was sporadic over the years. Only consoles I had (up until recently) were the Atari 2600 and super nintendo.
