i want to say that it would have been completely unrealistic to have merle settle down and join in, because he seemed so convinced that reliance on others was a life-threatening weakness, but he took orders from the governor without much issue. maybe there was more of an illusion of independence for him in that arrangement. he did the best thing that he was capable of, i guess. i think some people are always torn between wanting to belong to something and wanting to belong to themselves, and there's just no room for that now. the only way to be successfully independent is to be the one calling the shots, but absolute power corrupts absolutely. rick just reinstituted democracy, to save himself as much as everyone else, so things are probably moving in a good direction in a humanist sense. i want to believe that committing to one another as fully as possible will be how they get through, but i am getting tossed all about between optimism and despair, which makes me think they've probably replicated the real-world experience of this scenario about as accurately as anyone could.

also, for fork's sake, do not give me a zombie diamond that you pulled off a severed finger. propose to me with a dusty pebble or a pretty leaf or any other thing. any other thing.

for the record, i would TOTALLY say yes if someone proposed to me with a ring from a zombie severed finger. I'd say yes, even if I wasn't really into the dude.

well, michonne sussed out that he wasn't actually that bad of a guy. (or maybe he had a change of heart. maybe she helped him see that he can choose a different path.) she helped him see that the governor had used him, and probably wasn't going to stick to his word.

It seemed to be ripping off a bit of Star Wars to me. The evil henchman recants at the end of his life and dies doing a good dead.

I saw on Anderson Cooper Live that if you can bite through a baby carrot, you can bite through a finger.

I think Merle came to a similar conclusion, with some help from Michonne. His conversation with Carol had a lot to do with it, as well. She rocked. And Daryl, too.

Carol is so underrated! She's been forking amazing this season.

Doing something good (or at least, good for the group) does seem like a pretty sure fire way of ending up dead on this show. It's an interesting and subtle difference from the hopelessness of the Romero movies--there, we're doomed because we can't get along and trust each other. Here, we're doomed because our complex social edifice was demolished, and it cannot be rebuilt, no matter how desperately people want to get back there. Doing the right thing is probably maladaptive in this world, but there's an argument being advanced for doing the right thing anyway. It owes more to Cormac McCarthy than it does to Romero.

Yep. I think about old guy fighting for the captive kid to not be executed then being disemboweled by the zombie on the farm. T-Dog being open-minded about the prisoners then being eaten in the tombs trying to save Carol. Now Merle.

that's not exactly cause and effect, though. i mean, everyone in the group has done some good, socially minded stuff. sometimes terrible things happen to people who don't deserve it. it's just realistic. and arguably the best thing merle could have done for the group is go back with michonne and decide to be a real part of things and have their backs, and that might have kept him alive.

Yeah, like, lots of characters have died. Shane, Lorri, uh, other people. They weren't all being especially "good" when they bit it. NO PUN INTENDED. I feel like that is what one NY Times reviewer said and it's just being repeated over and over.

The claim is that being or doing good gets you killed, not that getting killed means you were good!

For once, could you not affirm the consequent?!

There's a blank line in the middle of that transcript. Guess what got edited out?

Spoiler: show
Fifteen pages of scalding abuse, during which Isa threatened to bomb the New York Times.

Also, Mumbles proved my point when he said that Dale was killed because he was friends with the writer who left, NOT BECAUSE THERE IS AN OVERARCHING THEME OF GOOD = DEATH.

IT IS POSSIBLE AND OFTEN EVEN ADVISABLE TO INTERPRET A WORK OF FICTION INDEPENDENT OF THE FORCES THAT LED TO ITS CREATION GAWD
