Holy smokes - he was only 51?! I'd have put him in his mid '60s. Jeebus.

When I first saw a post about this on FB, I didn't think it was true, like when someone reported Nelson Mandela had died but was actually about to be released from hospital.

This is sad. That's really quite young.

The show was based on the Northern NJ area where I live, and some of the most interesting parts of the show were set in the North Ward area of Newark that was controlled by the mob for decades. The crew on the show was based on the legendary 'Richie the Boot' Boiardo, head of the family that ran that part of town since Prohibition. Gandolfini and the show brought both a strange sort of reverence and recognition to the neighborhood but also a sense of the danger, violence, casual racism, sexism and homophobia. At least they never prettied it up and pretended that it didn't exist. It was a complicated show about complicated topics, and it took a very talented actor to translate all that nuance - to make a character that you rooted for, but would never want to be on the wrong side of.

I am in the middle of a Sopranos marathon and I think the show is amazing. I am so sad at the loss of an incredible talent, and sorry for his family, especially his 9 month old daughter Liliana. Rest in Peace James Gandolfini, you made the world a more interesting place.

This makes me sad, we found out yesterday sitting in my boyfriend's car drinking tea. I too thought he was older. He brought so much life to Sopranos and he was a good actor.

I never actually watched the Sopranos, though I know it's a great show and have heard about it. I remember seeing JG in True Romance and thinking him perfectly thuggish, you know. He wasn't your straight up character actor thug, even in that movie, there was more dimension to his character than you might see from other actors given the same role and even though it wasn't a big part, I thought he really made the most of it. His career was just beginning then and it was clear to me he was talented. One of these days, I'll get around watching the Sopranos.

RIP.

Eloquently put, Tofulish. I'm of course sad for the people who knew him, but I'm selfishly sad because I did like his acting. He never fell into the Soprano's typcast, which is kind of amazing considering how great he was in the Soprano's. He was one of the few actors that I was interested in seeing his performance, even if it was a smaller part, because they were all totally different characters and done well (IMO).

Tofulish, what you said about The Sopranos was beautiful. I also have to add this as one of his greatest performances:

:) How adorable is that? It made me so happy.
