I definitely saw John Denver later than that. My guess would be 1979 or so.

I saw Elton's Tony Danza Tour because Tiny Dancer was, I think, his hit around the time of that show which was also 1979ish, methinks (too lazy to google exactly when).

It was a small, small show with The Jeff Healey Band and Wide Mouth Mason. It was highly awesome (Jeff Healey was a blind guitarist and an amazing singer. The power went out during the show, he handled it with the patience of a saint!) I went "backstage" after wide mouth mason, they were still mainly a coverband back then with no security concerns, I thought the lead singer Shawn was cute,... well actually the band was standing to the side of the stage and I sidled up and met them. Have the pictures somewhere, it was fun! The night turned into a gongshow later though because I was maybe 14 or 15 and obviously couldn't drink, but I was sitting in with everyone who could including some bad news older friends.but yeah I will never forget it! I felt so mature lol.

My first little local gig was Thousand Yard Stare in 1992, but my first big gig was the XFM Great Xpectations show in 1993 - The Cure, Carter USM, Belly, Sugar and a Blur acoustic set amongst loads more.

I don't really count this, but my mom took me to a park for an outdoor concert to hear "The Band" cause she wanted to go. My first real concert was Paula Abdul! Yeah baby! I think I was 8 yrs old.

I went to see a bunch of local bands I don't remember the names of. The first bands of note that I saw were all at a voodoo fest, I think, and I can't remember any of those either. Brazilian Girls were there. I remember that because when I got home I tried to search for their music and got porn instead.

I was raised in an extremely religious, conservative household and I was never allowed to go to see bands or go to dances, so my first concert was really late. I think I was in 11th grade and I was hanging out with my best friend and when she learned that I had never been to a concert, she grabbed the newspaper and picked the only show happening at our local venue, insisting we go. It was the Charlie Daniels Band.

A video!!! So fancy Subcircus!

I shall choose to ignore your Feeder hatred!

The band I've seen most is Sleater-Kinney because I followed them on a tour in upstate NY one week and saw them 3-4 times within a week.

That's rad! I've only seen them once but it was obviously awesome.

I'm tryna think who the band I've seen the most is, it used to be Placebo (about 20 times!) but I'm pretty sure The Bouncing Souls are beating them now.

Must have been around 88-89, my older brother took me to see Def Leppard after Hysteria came out. That band "Europe" opened up and not only did they OPEN their set with their one hit "The Final Countdown"... they also CLOSED with it. Even though I was only 10 years old a my first rock concert, I remember knowing that was a lame move. I mean who does that?

Did they change the arrangement at all? I've seen a band do the same song twice in one set but differently. The first time was a new slowed down version and then in their encore they did the original. It was thrilling!

The first one I went to with friends had to have been Depeche Mode. I saw them and the Cure in the summer of 1986. I want to say the opener for DM was called Book of Love or something like that. No opening band for the Cure, but some dude on the floor did try to stab himself because (as a note he left in his truck revealed) some girl named Andrea had spurned him. Good times.

You saw Book of Love???!?!?!
Their song "Boy" is my theme song and the story of my life.

I just saw yesterday that they are playing a few dates in CA later this year. Oh how I wish they would come to NY.

Bob Dylan at Earls Court (London) in 1981. Our seats were in the second row and I was so excited I thought I might explode.

Gwar. Then I saw pretty much everybody who went through Chicago in the early 90s. Liz Phair, Buffalo Tom, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Prince (symbol guy back then, but it was an itty bitty venue, so it was awesome). One of my favorites was a Belfast band that broke up after not going anywhere, Ghost of an American Airman.

Liz Phair was the worst. She was so godawful nervous that it was like watching the most painfully shy kid stutter through a school report. I felt bad for her since it was a Tower Records thing and most people ended up leaving, which only made her more nervous. I don't think she got through a single song without stumbling/stopping. She was super nice though; my boyfriend interviewed her for the uni paper after and I tagged along.

After Gwar, the showmanship on stage must have been a bit of a letdown for the first few concerts afterwards.

Well, there was some free concert from the local alternative music channel I convinced my parents to drop me off at, back in like 1994. That might have been the first? The first night, I think Sarah Maclachlan closed, and that was really cool because I think it was a solo show. The next night was Collective Soul (bleh) and the Green Day. The station misjudged how popular Greed Day would be though, and they ended up cancelling the show right before they came on because too many people were trying to get in and the natives were getting restless.

The first non-parentally assisted show was to go see They Might Be Giants in Toledo, Ohio, I think. That might have been 1995?
