I didn't know that, either - it is awesome! (I always feel a childishly adolescent sense of pleasure when I hear that famous people whose work I like are married to/in relationships with each other!)

Oh my goodness, I just discovered Downton Abbey the other day. I finished the both seasons so quickly! It is honestly one of the best shows I have seen, and I am so excited for the third season! :)

Lady Mary births octuplets! Mr Bates reveals himself as Jack the Ripper! Matthew, Thomas and Tom run off to live in Denmark and make pornographic arthouse films! Lady Edith finally snaps and is caught posting dog poos through letterboxes in the village!

Should we start a season 3 thread? that way US people can join in in January when it starts here. Or I can just put a spoilers warning on this thread. gulliver, i know your spoilers were jokes, but i figured people might want to actually talk about the show. love your edith spoiler, though!

Spoiler: show
Funnily enough, that's the only one that actually happens. That grazed glint in her eye... we all knew it was there from the beginning.

You don't get it until January? What a travesty!

We can shuffle off to the UK and Ireland forum if we really have to.

you dont have to. you can talk about it here. i just want to put a warning in the thread title. or just start a new general living room thread since there will probably be a lot of drama to talk about anyway.

uh oh, i don't wanna start a whole dramatic thing about spoilers again. it's not really a big deal to just make a season 3 thread, right? many other shows talked about on the boards have separate threads for separate seasons.

::edit:: unless...you were just referring to you guys getting a show before us. in which case, i take back my previous statement.

All 8 babies are female, however. And Sibyl's offspring are similarly unable to inherit due to being Irish. Edith goes on a mad quest to breed but who is going to shtup the poo mailer? Once again, the fate of Downton Abbey is up in the air!

So can we talk S3 in here now or should we go with a new thread?

Finally finished watching the first two seasons this weekend. I am head over heels in love with this show.

Answer me this....Lady Mary never really had sex with foreigner did she? I understand the whole purity before marriage thing, but really now. It seemed like they just made out and then he croaked.

And how was it ok for Lard Granthom to up and marry an American? I just heard some speculation that they are going to make a prequel so we find out how they got together.

How far apart in relation are Matthew and Mary? Was that still common in the 20's?

It was pretty common for impoverished European/British aristocrats to marry American heiresses - the former were desperate for cash, the latter for cachet, et voila! (This cash vs. class dynamic is central to much of (ex-pat American) Henry James' fiction!) And it's not like the Grantham was in line to inherit the throne or anything; it's been clear from the beginning that it's all about keeping the estate intact, no matter what that entails (pun intended).

I think they're second or third cousins; not such a big deal even today, especially among aristocrats or royalty...those peole have been marrying each other for centuries; provided there's enough money to keep things going, why stop now, right? And remember that Mary had already been engaged to the previous heir, who was also a cousin (the one who may or may not have gone down with the Titanic); clearly the whole "intermarrying cousins" thing is cool chez Grantham!

Word. That sort of thing can turn out really badly if you keep it going long enough!
