I am loving this show so much (despite, or maybe because of, its soap opera-ness). I watched all of it this weekend, up to the latest PBS episode, and then I came here and started reading this thread in a British accent. Clearly a week off will do me some good.

So, will Bates now be accused of murdering his wife? Even after only two days, I'm a little tired of his repetitive storyline (proving innocence / wife is evil / repeat), but I like him. And I want him and Anna to be able to just get on with it already.

And I still want Matthew and Mary together, even though I don't think she has any great qualities, and it feels wrong to be rooting for cousins to hook up.

I thought it was horrifically sad, and thought he was the real heir, but my boyfriend thinks he was fake and left because he felt guilty.

I'm inclined to think he's a fake; no English aristo could have completely lost his accent (and by that I mean not just inflection and intonation, but vocabulary, phrasing, idiomatic usage, etc.) in 5 years, amnesia or no amnesia. That said, I'm afraid we haven't heard the last of him; the soap operatic potential is just too great!

I'm with Desdemona. Julian Fellowes doesn't seem to be the sort to add random plotline drama and then just abandon it without another word. P. Gordon will return...

Just watched the Christmas Special -- gahhh!! I can't believe how much happened, and I got all choked up at the end. <shame>

If P Gordon is real then the entire plot of the show thus far was for naught.

I like Edith too, and I don't think she's been any more of a jerk than Mary has. And I think she'd be much more interesting to talk to than Mary.

She shouldn't have kissed that married farmer, but I also wish he hadn't been married! It's rare when two people on this show have chemistry and are clear about liking each other. Usually it's like, Person 1: "I love you!" Person 2: "Let me think about it".

I don't know. Maybe I am a bad person, but I still like Mary better than Edith. Edith would annoy me. I like Mary because I don't have to yell, "Don't be ridiculous!" at the screen--she does it for me. And I kindof get why Mary is so horrid sometimes; if my entire purpose in life was to marry some nob and secure the family line, I would be an irritated asparagus to pretty much everyone around me.

I didn't like Mary so much at first, but I've grown to like her the most of the upstairs crowd.

This weekend I watched the whole first series and everything from the 2nd series that was on PBS. I'm hooked. I thought it was kind of boring at first, but then I got totally sucked in.

I hate Mary this last ep. She needs to suck it up and get on with her life instead of making things difficult for everyone else.

I wanted to comment on last night's show, but all I can think is 'Naked Bates! Naked Bates! Aaahh!'. They've set that character up in such a way that I feel like Anna just married her friend's dad. Maybe because he's older and she calls him "Mr. Bates". Anyway, that was such an awkward scene. Did not like.

I did like their explanation for Matthew walking again (Doc: "Oops!"), heh. And I hope Sybil and Branson work out, even though she called him a ticket out of there. So romantic, Sybil.

In the preview for next week, I saw a Christmas tree- so are they combining the Christmas special that has been mentioned with season 2? I just want to know if next week's episode is the last, or if there's something else coming.

The Christmas special is the season 2 finale. And it's so good!!!

I had serious doubts about this show, but we watched both season in less than 2 weeks.

I didn't watch this week and was so confused as to which episode had just aired based on the conversation....then I realized that they played two episodes together! So for those that haven't seen them yet:

episode 7 (or first half of episode 5) summary

episode 8 (or second part of episode 5) summary

Ugh, yes, I can't stand her! It seems like every sentence that comes out of her mouth is forced! She takes me out of the Downton ZONE merely by being there.

Naked Bates was pretty horrifying. Why is Anna still calling him Mr. Bates? Is that usual?

And what is Thomas up to? I thought he was going to poison Carson or something this episode. There must be some nefarious plot twist with him coming next season, I refuse to believe he's turned into a good person just because he's broke.
