Yeah I watched a Masterchef Australia once with a Muslim contestant, she still had to do all the alcohol/pork/etc challenges, just couldn't taste them, which is obviously a disadvantage. So maybe a "plant based" person could be good, if they make some vegan cakes that taste nice (if they taste horrible we're screwed).

I was surprised Selasi didn't get star baker last night - I thought he was the best by quite a long way.

How did some of these feckers not know what a Jaffa Cake looked like?

Also: no Scottish contestant! Conspiracy! I bet Scottish Twitter has been having a field-day with such scandal.

This! Plus I super loved that they edited it in such a way that it kept looking as though Selasi and Paul were lovingly gazing into one anothers eyes.

And this! We were really confused by the confusion over which side was the top of a Jaffa Cake! There is a Northern Irish guy this year, though.

My friends cake was shown on the show. She didn't get through but it was shown at the begining

I, too, concur with these points. I was shouting at the tv over the jaffa cake business. I haven't eaten a jaffa cake in countless years, but I bleeding well know what one looks likes.

Selasi is my early favourite to win... but sometimes someone surprises you!

Yay, new Bake Off!

I was annoyed at the amount of gelatine in last nights episode (grrr!) and the judges general ignorance (One contestant made a yuzu fruit glaze...stating "it tastes a bit like a cross between a lemon and a lime"...when Paul came to judge "I don't like it because I can't tell if it tastes like lemon or lime" well duh, because it's yuzu, not lemon or lime!) but I still enjoyed it.

I'm so glad there's a thread for this!

I think the judges are surprisingly old-fashioned or unadventurous in their tastes. As soon as it was obvious that Paul hadn't heard of yuzu, I knew he was going to say he hated it. The same with the matcha. I can believe there was too much matcha in that green cake, but how had neither Paul nor Mary had anything matcha-flavoured before?!

I read beforehand that Rav "enjoys vegan baking", which I thought was vague enough to mean that he wasn't actually vegan. Hopefully he'll produce some vegan things during the show though - wasn't there a free-from week last time? Of course, I'm sure Paul will sneer at him if he does so.

I couldn't believe the guy who not only made upside-down Jaffa Cakes, but also initially attempted to serve them chocolate-side down. Has he just never even seen a Jaffa Cake before?!

You mean Eddie Redmayne?

I'm cheering for Selasi so far. I can't believe how relaxed he was while all the other contestants were basically unhinged during the showstopper. It's like he was just taking a walk around the neighborhood and wandered into the tent by accident...baking challenge? Why not?

You know there is a German word that means exactly that?

Yeah, liked Selasi and found the whole thing with Paul Hollywood and yuzu really stupid. I was surprised at how many of the showstoppers were a bit of a hot mess.

Agreed with everyone on Selasi. I suppose he did forget to add ingredients in a couple of cases but he made it good and didn't have to completely start anything over like Jane did.

I was also surprised at people's seeming lack of knowledge in the technical, not only about what a jaffa cake should look like but one guy didn't seem to know how to make a fatless sponge! Haven't they seen bake-off before? I guess it's not mandatory to master the basic types of cake, pastry, frosting etc. techniques but it seems like common sense and it makes me wonder how contestants got through to that level without having that knowledge, whether they have weeded out the more technically proficient bakers in the belief that seeing people make a hash of things will be more interesting TV? I hope not.

I hate the biscuit construction exercise every year, I can just feel the tension and dismay when something inevitably collapses. I'm looking forward to seeing how terribly Val does next week, she seems totally out of her depth. I quite like Candice and was glad her pub construction succeeded. Hopefully she's going to wear a shocking colour of lipstick every week. I was worried for Selasi after the technical, but of course he was as cool as a cucumber for the showstopper.

Is the show even smuttier without Sue?! Mel was on good form last night!

Selasi slipped up on his Viennese whirls! :O

It is so hard watching them spend hours making ornate gingerbread structures, only for them to be destroyed in seconds by Paul.

Oh yes, I could not do that. Hours of work making these edible pieces of art and then...just snapped in half by Paul. At least show some finesse, he chops the gingerbread people like he's badly chopping a carrot!

I literally laughed out loud at Eddie Redmayne because that is spot on. Paul is doing my head in this season, he doesn't seem like he wants to be there, but I love Candice! She is so sweet and adorable and she made that amazing pub! With a little cola bottle on the bar!

Well, that's not very 'British', is it? ;) (loads of people on t'internet seem to think he's Scottish. LOL)

I can't watch it now since the Tory tv licence forkers have set about the iplayer. fork them I'm not paying a licence that is bullshiitake to begin with and forks over my country with regard to funding and lack of representation (I'm not referring to the Bake Off candidates here at all; it's a way bigger thing than that silliness. Can we have a proper news programme, for instance?!)

I walk round to my parent's to watch it now because I also refuse to pay £145 a year for the "independent" broadcasting of the BBC!

You joke about his accent but I actually thought he was Scottish at first! This week I thought he sounded really Welsh until he said something was "harsh" and we all laughed at how Norn Irish he suddenly became.

I can't believe Val is still in this!

Every week I become more convinced that Kate is a psychopath.
