It's been handed over to Channel 4 so Mel and Sue have quit.

Also means there will be adverts. Boo-urns.

Nooooooooo !

And this also means that all the licenses to rebroadcast globally will have to be renegotiated. In Canada we used to be able to access the show through the American PBS channel. This likely won't happen any more as PBS doesn't have a lot of bucks as they fund operations through public fundraising.

I could just about cope with adverts, but no Mel and Sue??!! I wonder if Paul and Mary will stay? Also, I wonder if Channel 4 knew Mel and Sue were leaving before they paid squillions for the programme?

Apparently Mary is saying she might not go either. Which leave Paul, the one I don't like! I don't know if I'll be watching it when it moves. It won't be the same without mel & sue.

It's not going to be the same programme at all, with them all gone. It's like when they tried to do Top Gear again (not that I ever liked Top Gear, but the re-do was still a flop).

Also not being on BBC means that there won't just be adverts cutting up the show, but product placement within the show. A baking show has HUGE potential for that - showing off the Kenwood Mixer or the special sugar or whatever. Even the little "info" bits where they go and talk about the history of biscuits could end up being a visit to the Mr Kipling factory and oohing and aahing over how great Mr Kipling is.

I don't especially care for the bbc, so I have nothing against the idea of a move in general, but I doubt I would watch it without Mel and Sue. Bad times.

I kind of hope Mary quits too now, so I can cut ties completely and just consider this season the last one. I don't want to see in on channel 4, where the episodes will have to be shorter to accommodate adverts, but if Mary stays on then I'm scared she will pull me in.

As for last night, I can't believe Rav survived! I can't stand Kate, and I was astonished she was considered the worst of the group. I think Benjamina and Andrew are looking strong at the moment, and Jane as well, though I'm not sure she seems as marketable as the others as a winner (I don't think we've seen much personality from her yet).

Did anyone else roll their eyes at Paul's reaction to tofu? And his astonishment that it actually tasted fine? Ugh.

Ugh yeah, Paul's reaction to tofu was awful. I mean for a guy who is meant to be a great cook he seems to have a lot of hang ups about food that's out of his comfort zone. Which is a pretty bad thing for a judge of a baking competition. Being scared of tofu is pretty amateur too.

He does always look so smug and he's utterly unhelpful with the contestants. Mary I like and anyway she is a baking legend, but I don't know how she puts up with him.

Interesting. My favourite part of the show is Mel and Sue and the lack of adverts/recaps

Goodbye Val, at last. I'm not sure how much more I could have put up with The Smug.

How did they all find a simple Bakewell Tart so "retro"?! Anyone would think they were making some ancient recipe nobody makes anymore. Maybe it's because I live in Derby but bakewell tarts aren't exactly old news... I mean you can buy Mr Kipling versions!

Aw, I thought Val was kind of adorable. Andrew's technical about broke my heart. I so want him to get star baker at least once! And how on earth is Rav still there?

Agreed. It's going to lose so much of the charm now.

Our Internet cut out so we missed most of the technical challenge, besides everyone complaining about Bakewell tarts and Val saying she made one per week. It was quite fun trying to guess who had done badly based on their reactions during the showstopper judging. Candace and Jane are looking very capable. I really want Andrew to get star baker. I like Rav a lot, but I think he and Tom have to be the next to go. Besides Tom's one good week, I think they've both been lucky to get this far.

The trailer for next week made me laugh. "Botanical" week?! And Selasi rocking a flowery shirt?! I hope this hasn't replaced the free-from week they had last year, because I wanted Rav to stay in long enough to do a vegan cake.

I am so happy Kate and Val have gone. I disliked both of them. Sadly if Paul Hollywood is the only remaining judge then I am out. I also think it makes Paul Hollywood look a bit tacky frankly, as in "I don't care what happens to the brand, I want the money." But what do I know?

Mat.

Yeah, Paul is staying. I'm not exactly surprised, but yeah. Will it now be the Paul Hollywood Show? He says it's because he loves the Bake Off, but really, what is it without the other three?

The show will not be the same without Mary, Mel and Sue. Paul's snarly judging will set the tone of the new show.

Perhaps the BBC can craft a new show or even BBC specials with Mary, Mel and Sue....

The BBC may lack the funds and commerical shine of advertisements but they are creative and savvy in business. Look what they did with the Adele special that helped relaunched her career.

Paul Hollywood is my least favourite presenter, and I agree with Mat that he looks very tacky for chasing the money (apparently his new wage packet is "significantly larger" according to the news this evening). I very much doubt I will be watching next year.

In a previous episode, didn't Tom say he and all his family were vegetarian? And then he cooks steak?

Funny cartoon about the move to Channel 4 in the Guardian magazine today:

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyl ... ff-cartoon

(obviously went to print before Mary said she wasn't going either).

Rav seemed really out of his depth last night, but I'm still sorry to see him go. And I was sad to see Tom win star baker - I thought he took the criticism of his meringue pie quite poorly (and he didn't really follow the brief, did he?), and his "Fougasse is my cinema snack of choice" bit rubbed me the wrong way. I'm worried he's a dead cert for the final, because Paul would never get rid of the person who won bread week, bread-making being the most important skill to him.

I actually thought last night's episode was a bit dull. There wasn't much variety in the signature dishes, and only Selasi and Benjamina's flirting kept it interesting. The technical was largely just waiting for the dough to rise. And even the showstopper section didn't have as much tension or excitement as usual. Something just seemed a bit off.

Benjamina doing a "naked cake" and the presenters and judges having NO IDEA what a naked cake is. You could almost see her face like "where have you guys been the last decade?!". It's one of the things that really annoys me about the show, the "baking" all seems to refuse to move with the times. Even with Candice's cake, the top layer was gluten free and Paul was all "oh it's so hard to make gluten free cake" I mean really? It's not! It was...in the past...but it really isn't that hard anymore. I can't imagine what he'd say if he was faced with aquafaba.

Yeah, I thought the judges were quite unfair about Benjamina's decoration - it seemed like they thought she hadn't finished it or had been sloppy, when she clearly had achieved the desired effect. That annoys me about them too. On a similar note, I was really hoping that someone would do a yuzu meringue pie, just to confuse them again.
