Phil Everly died today, at 74.

I am such an Everly Brothers fan. I saw them perform twice. We went to Reno once just to see them. This is very sad.

If your only exposure to the Everly Brothers is their famous ditties like "Wake Up, Little Susie" and "Bye, Bye Love," I urge you to give them a second look. Their legendary harmonies, beautifully blended voices, and deeply earnest emotion make them eternal stars of popular music.

They have a deep catalog of hits and other memorable songs. You'll be richly rewarded by getting to know them.

Footie, have you heard any of the Billie Joe Armstrong/Norah Jones covers? I think they did a really nice job paying tribute to the Everly harmonies and it's a neat project since it remade a record of songs the Everlys grew up on versus their radio hits.

I haven't heard it (the BJ/NJ album), no.

The (Everlys') album was so weird. After their first album, with all those hits, they release this album full of mournful, not-very-commercial songs.

You totally should. Nick grew up listening to and loving The Everly Brothers and he really likes what they've done with the album.

Thaf sounds like something my dad would have done. Only he'd have tried to convince adults of it too.

One of my dad's friends brought a cut out of ZZ Top to his store, so he had a picture taken with it, had prints made, hung them in his store, and then told everyone who asked about the picture that he was the long lost fourth member, and they used to be called [dad's name] and the Tops.

They were wonderful; such great tunes and harmonies. And as this Guardian post points out, late 20th century pop music would have sounded very different without their influence.

Even the Dead used to cover "Wake Up, Little Susie" back in the day, which I've always thought was super cute.

Although for my money, "When Will I Be Loved" is pretty hard to beat. Check them out on American Bandstand.

I've been jamming to my greatest hits album the last few days, and When Will I Be Loved is the one I keep repeating.

It is so catchy, and so very singable. <3

Oh, my parents are going to be bummed! They named me Susie because of the Everly Brothers.
