I've just realized I don't know what he means. Unless all he means is, "She was born approximately 17 years ago," in which case, I think it's a trivial thing to say.

She was just seventeen. You know what I mean.

Yeah, you mean she was seventeen. Do I win the prize?

Is "seventeen" a Liverpudlian code word I missed out on?

And is there a grosser place name than Liverpool? Shouldn't Liverpool be filtered? Like, to… loverpool or something?

ETA: THIS IS MY LEET POST! 1337!

Maybe he was stuck on the fact that she wasn't 18 yet and legal.

i always thought it was a reference to a lovely dewfaced dimpled piece of jailbait.

and just by the by, i spent the day with a liverpudlian last week and i had to sit on my hand so i wouldn't reach out and pinch his cheek and squeal "aren't you PRECIOUS!!!" when he said "nuffink" and "sumfink". squee!

Perfectly legal in the UK. Age of consent is 16.

Scousers (people from Liverpool) are wonderful, friendly, lovely people unless it comes to the subject of underage sex then they all turn into flaming demons and go hunting preschoolers.

ETA I had to go check that the age of consent in the UK was 16 in 1963 and it was! I learned about the history of UK age of consent legislation today. The PPK is a truly thought provoking place.

Maybe he was referring to an American youth...

She was just 17 - that annoying age where you are completely convinced your parents are absolutely wrong, and you have lots of fights with them, but feel insecure and out of place with respect to the rest of the world and are therefore willing to defer to people in a way you won't when you're older and have a little more self confidence. You are also a hormonal little beast who is just discovering how fun it is to make out.

At least that is the way it was for me.

In fact, these were the original lyrics, but George Martin made them change it because they didn't scan.

Then there's "Christeen Sixteen" by Kiss, and "Going Blind" by Kiss ("I'm 93...you're 16")

"Sexy and 17" by the Stray Cats

and a personal favorite "Expose Yourself to Kids" by GG Allin...

perhaps those songs can offer you some clues as to what the Beatles mean

Ew! But at least when the Beatles were writing this, they were only in their late teens/early twenties themselves.

1. I like that this post is titled "No, the Beatles" instead of "No, Beatles".
2. I always assumed that usage of "you know what I mean" was synonymous with Monty Python's "wink wink nudge nudge".
