I need to make a couple good playlists for my classes this week.

We are doing hands on mineral stuff all week, so I'll put music on. The kids work better with some music, and I'm not letting them use their iPods/phones when they should be working as a group. This is pretty standard policy in my district and how most classes work.

Any suggestions for a good playlist of maybe 20 songs or so? I don't mind spending $20 or so on iTunes. Sometimes I put on iTunes radio, but even with the no explicit songs checked, some songs are a little iffy so I'd rather not worry about appropriateness.

I need stuff teens won't hate, that I won't hate, and that would be good working background. Obviously they all like different stuff, so I'm looking for an upbeat mix that makes everybody content and productive.

So far all I've got is Katy Perry's new single Roar. They mostly like that (and I do too). I played art of trance once and they got mad at me. Hah. I refuse to play Taylor Swift.

Just get a copy of "Einstein on the Beach" and play it over and over. Everyone loves Philip Glass!

Ugh. No. Philip Glass gives me such a headache. I've tried. I'd rather be forced to listen to the entire ring cycle in one sitting with no bathroom breaks.

80's dance party radio is my fall back choice.

80s music is a great choice, just have some variety. (I recall my 10th grade science teacher putting "Roxanne" on repeat for DAYS during an astronomy project.)

Well, okay. If you think kids these days prefer peppy pop music over cycling repetitive experimental opera, well, back in MY day I didn't get invited to a lot of parties.

This is my 80's dance mix, made for a friend's bowling party:

Bring Me Edelweis 3:42 Edelweiss
Always On My Mind 3:55 Pet Shop Boys
Church of the KLF 1:53 The KLF
Last train to trancentral (LP mix) 3:41 The KLF
Blue Monday - ('88) 4:08 New Order
Relax 3:57 Frankie Goes To Hollywood
How Soon Is Now? 6:46 The Smiths
Cuts You Up 4:57 Peter Murphy
X Y & Zee (Sensory Amplification Mix) 7:18 Pop Will Eat Itself
The Girl With The Sun In Her Head 10:27 Orbital

(Sorry about the formatting... I copied it from iTunes. It gets 90's-y toward the end, but nobody will mind much.)

This is a pretty great 1991 mix:

(I have the actual mix kicking around downloaded if you'd prefer. I can put it somewhere for you to retrieve.)

That'd be great.

I just want some fun variety. It's just annoying when it's going well then "I want your sex" comes on. That's of course when an admin would walk into the room. Not that people are too uptight at my school, but I don't want to borrow trouble.

The other teacher I work with plays country all day.

I second JoPa's rec for Devo! I'd have loved the hell out of that and the teacher who played it.
