Octavia Butler!!!!! All the way.

Coming in a distant second (no disrespect, because he's brilliant) Junot Diaz.

And I can't believe I forgot James Baldwin. Oh my god James Baldwin.

Not a fan of Junot Diaz or Murakami, totally a fan of Gabriel Garcia Marquez & Zadie Smith.

I also love Rattawut Lapcharoensap.

Octavia Butler, Zadie Smith, Toni Morrison and Thomas King!

My favourite Butler series thus far is Xenogensis (though it's published in one volume now as Lilith's Brood).

I forgot Asian authors... Kazuo Ishiguro is one of my favourite authors. Julie Otsuka's "The Buddha in the Attic" was one of the best books I read the last year. I only read Yiyun Li's "A Thousand Years of Good Prayers" (her first short story book) and I havent yet read any of her novels but I really want to.

I also like some of Colson Whitehead's books.

I guess I never really understand what PoC means, the concept is a bit weird to me. White latinos and white Turkish people aren't PoC?

Latinos are a mix of natives to the Americas, Africans brought over as slaves, Spanish/Portuguese and various other immigrants/colonists. Due to the mix, you have latinos of all different shades of colors and sadly there isn't always a concept of one people within the respective latin american countries. In the US, they have now a concept of white latino and black latino on government type forms which I think is kind of silly because what do you do if you are in the middle? Anyway, latinos in the US are not considered white irregardless of their skin color, eye color or hair color, they are discriminated against and may have trouble having their books become main stream like other non-white authors. Sure some authors can publish exclusively in english but I find that many latino authors became famous in spanish speaking countries and then only then would their books be published and well regarded in the US.

N. K. Jemisin, fantasy (her Dreamblood series is my favorite)

Malinda Lo, YA SFF (I won't spoil it, but her Adaptation gets a gold star for its ending alone)

Gene Luen Yang, graphic novelist. Haven't read too much by him, but The Shadow Hero is my favorite and I appreciate that it's an all-Asian team. Illustrated by Sonny Liew and lettered by Janice Chiang.

Toni Morrison, Alice Walker (many years ago I wrote my dissertation on those two), Benjamin Zephaniah, Marquez, Ishiguro (I met him once on a course - very nice guy).

Wow, thank you. I was a bit confused! While I'm definitely not caucasian/white, I never thought I could consider myself a person of color.

I like Horacio Quiroga very much :) Carlos Fuentes, Jaime Sabines, Amado Nervo, Alfonsina Storni. Sorry I have an awful memory, hehe. If you ask me what exactly have I read from them, I'll only be able to name some stories written by Quiroga or Fuentes.

Yes! N.K. Jemisin, I loved her! I actually liked the Inheritance trilogy better, interestingly.
And definitely Octavia Butler, she is incredible and I love her work. I wish she'd lived long enough to give us a sequel to Fledgling.

Malinda Lo's Adaptation books I liked a lot, but didn't actually love the writing? More the themes and topics she covered, so rarely explored in YA fiction. I think she's a solid writer but not my absolute favourite.

Also Helen Oyeyemi. If you haven't read her, you need to. She's incredible. She writes what I would call magical realism, (but she doesn't, because according to her only Marquez is magical realism). Whatever the genre, it's really good.

I've heard amazing things about Ryka Aoki's work, but I have yet to read any. I'm really looking forward to it when I do get to though.

I find Louise Erdrich hard to read because her subject matter is tough, but she is an engrossing, beautiful writer.

I have the Inheritance Trilogy omnibus, but I haven't read The Kingdom of Gods yet. Agreed on Malinda Lo: I appreciate her themes and ideas, but I don't feel strongly about her prose.

(Putting Oyeyemi and Aoki on my to-read list.)

Oh! I've heard great things about Nnedi Okorafor.
