I watched Margaret a few nights ago. I really liked it, but it was to watch at times.

Today I watched Gladiator for the first time. Quite violent, but overall an enjoyable film to watch.

Went to see Side Effects tonight. Very twisty and interesting, but the end was a bit of a letdown.

Watched Hansel and Gretel. I liked it because it was gory. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't the best either in my opinion. It was just something to keep me entertained for a couple hours.
Also watched Warm Bodies. The best part of the entire movie in my eyes was the narration. I think it needed to have way more gore (it is a zombie movie) and probably not so many pre-teens in the theater. Wasn't a big fan of the movie, but my not liking it could also be attributed to all the pre-teens around me laughing at parts that I thought were not that funny.

I watched Seven Psychopaths the other night. I enjoyed this film. Much darker than I suspected from the trailer I saw. Though it had its comedic points also. I found myself thinking about the stories of the different psychopaths the next day so must have enjoyed it more than I thought.

Casablanca. I thought the performances were great and the locale exotic and I liked Sam and the piano in the middle of the bar and Bogie and Ingrid and Paul Henried and yadda yadda but somehow, I din't like the story much. Or something. I dunno. I get why it's such a good movie but it didn't resonate with me like, say, Sullivan's Travels or It Happened One Night. I think I might need to watch it again but, you know. It's one of those things you have to see once if you want to be any kind of movie buff.
The Talented Mr. Ripley: I always stayed far away from this movie back in the day and since (released 1999). The idea of it just annoyed me at the time, all Matt Damon, Gwynnie P and Jude Law and those actors-of-the moment in one cast always rankles me in a production. But now, enough time has passed, enough water's gone under the bridge for that annoyance to pass and for me to watch this movie now without bias and I thought it was really good. Sad when Jude Law's gone from the movie, it does slip a notch for his loss but overall, very enjoyable flick and definitely will re-watch whenever it comes on TV. Now I want to read the book!

Bully: Made me sad and angry. Keep thinking about a few scenes from it that really bothered me. Should be watched with teens and young folks, I think.

The Hobbit: I know some people liked it, but all I can say is that it's three hours of my life I'll never get back. Hansel and Gretel, Witch Hunters: This was SO BAD. We laughed the whole way through it. If you're looking for quasi B-movie campiness, go see it. But do yourself a favor and have a few drinks first. Seriously, Hansel is diabetic from his childhood encounter with the witch in the gingerbread house? And if he doesn't give himself his shot IMMEDIATELY when his watch alarm goes off he starts to go into a diabetic coma and die? Like clockwork? Seriously??? Also, HEALING WATERS.

I watched Moonstruck last weekend. I liked the ambiance of the movie and the muzak. I loved how Vikki Carr was playing for some of it. Man, that's pure nostalgia for me. When I was a young'un back in 1973 or so and first discovering music, I sampled all my mother's albums and played her Jesus Christ Superstar and Vikki Carr records ad nauseum. "Let it please be him, oh dear God It must be him, it must be him Or I shall die, or I shall die. Oh hello, hello, my dear God It must be him but it's not him And then I die. AND THEN I DIEEEEE..." Anyone ever read Dorothy Parker's short piece "The Telephone" (or a title like that). Same idea. Same pathetic idea. But sadly, I could once tragically relate and I suppose that's the point. Back to the movie! So, likeable on the whole. I thought the ending was much too pat. Much too pat. Like, so, Cher's whole family gathers around her kitchen table where she ditches her fiance and his offbeat brother asks her to marry him all in one scene and while the dumpage is washing over the overthrown brother, everyone's happy and cheers'ing each other? EVEN THE BROTHERS!? Betrothed-to-be and fresh ditchee brahs clinking coffee mugs or champagne glasses or whatever it was like mutual celebrants, happy for each other? Completely implausible. I think not. I THINK NOT.

Watched 5 Broken Cameras. This is the documentary by that Palestinian director (Emad Burnat) who got detained in LAX whilst attending the Oscars. It's mostly filmed in the West Bank and it's damn good. The images are powerful, the story is captivating.

I watched Detective Dee the other day for, I think, the fourth time. I didn't plan on watching it again. I was flipping through channels and it had just started, and then I got caught up in it. Andy Lau is great as Di Renjie and I love love love Li Bingbing's Jing'er. Deng Chao is excellent as Pei Donglai, as well.
Fish Story
Last Life in the Universe (Ruang rak noi nid mahasan - kind of a word play. Two of the characters in the film are Noi and Nid, which means Few and Small, so it can mean Love Story of Noi and Nid, a Lot, or A Small Little Love Story That Is a Lot). One of the main characters is played by Tadanobu Asano, who played Kakihara in Ichi the Killer, Hattori Gennosuke in Zatoichi, and Aman in Survive Style 5+.

Beasts of the Southern Wild. Didn't care for it. Too bad! Also, The Dictator. Meh. Not Sacha's best by a long shot. It was the real life pranks that made Bruno and Borat good. Dictator had none of that.
