Prisoners.
I couldn't hear most of the muffled talk so I missed huge chunks of the story unfolding. Other than that......

The Monuments Men.
too smultzy for me, too much effort for funny one liners, not serious enough. I have seen a lot of the art that was the subject, loved the documentary "The Rape of Europa" and am now reading the MM book. I just something more in depth and didn't get it.

Yes, I took the kids last night! It was fun. There were more teens and adults there than children!

I just came in to post about this! We saw it tonight and really enjoyed it. There were 4 of us with pretty diverse taste in film, and everyone loved it. There were lots of genuine laugh-out-loud moments that came from the writing and delivery rather than crude humour (like you might expect from a kids' movie). I cried at the end (but I think I'm PMSing). Having seen some "outtakes" online, I'm betting this will be great to watch on DVD and get lots of fun extras. You will, however, get that song stuck in your head for the rest of the night.

No one's mentioned Cuban Fury yet! It's brilliant, everyone should go watch it! I'm going to see it again next week (and not just because my salsa teacher is in it for a 1/4 of a second! haha).

12 years a slave

it was good but Im not completely convinced it's great. I mean, it definitely touched me, I felt horrible the first 3 hours after watching it but I dont know, I think it was too intense and violent and it felt a bit cheapened?

We went to bad movie day at our friends' place yesterday. The first film was Thor: Hammer of the Gods, starring Zachery Ty Bryan (one of the kids from Home Improvement) as Thor before he was a god (I think). Most of the other characters were gods before being gods as well, and they were fighting werewolves. It was as bad as it sounds. The other film was Humanity's End, starring no one even as famous as that kid from Home Improvement. In fact, one guy kept popping up in different roles, both in front of and behind the camera. The main character seemed to be going for a Han Solo-like loveable scamp but came off as a misogynistic, racist, entitled man-child with no redeeming features. We all decided that, if he was the saviour of humanity, we were quite happy for it to end.

It is a demented comedy that you wouldn't think would be a comedy but it is. I'm not sure which is worse, that Netflix thought we'd like it or that we actually did. Anyway, it is about an interesting road trip in the British countryside. If you have a slightly demented humor, you may like it as well.

I watched the HBO movie The Girl (it's script is supposedly based on an interview Tippi Hedren gave a few years back detailing how Alfred Hitchcock lusted after her while making The Birds and how AH punished Tippi by putting her in frightening situations with the birds while filming when she refused to go along with his advances and subsequently destroyed her career because she got no more jobs after appearing in two of AH's films). Anyway, as a movie, I wasn't too impressed with this one. Despite the provocative subject matter, it was a pretty dull film overall and I wasn't intrigued or gripped and just sort of waited for it to be over.

Blue is the Warmest Color.
I hestitated taking this on because it clocks in at 3 hours, but it was so beautiful and so moving that I hardly noticed.
highly recommend.

I watched The Butler. I thought it was really good-especially Oprah. It made me teary in places which admittedly isn't hard.

I watched Aliens for the first time. Yes, really. It was good, and now I get a few more pop culture references - yay!

^I love your reviews, Randi. Now I totally want to see all the movies! Although I still don't want to see American Hustle though I wanted to see it more than I ever have after reading your review. I just feel like I know what that movie will be and I don't want to be right.

I saw some of the Oscars. Although I obviously missed Harrison Ford because they were making fun of him on SNL last night and if I'd seen it, I would have remembered that. I saw John Travolta call (I think it's Idina) "Adele". I saw Ellen's mass celebrity selfie and the pizza guy schtick. I saw Liza Minelli's reaction to Ellen's impersonator joke. I remember Jared Leto, Spike Jonze and Matthew McConaghey's speeches but not really anyone else's--the latter two because they were a bit odd and seemed disconnected from the audience to me, a bit of the conversation-with-self ilk, like eavesdropping when they're motivationally-speaking to themselves privately in front a bathroom mirror, or something.

Two docs this week:
20 Feet from Stardom - very good, not sure it's an Academy Award winner but good nonetheless

Tim's Vermeer - absolutely fascinating.

Her was kind of disappointing.

But I just watched Marketa Lazarova a few days ago, and that was great.

So there.

I've watched a few movies recently - Dallas Buyers Club, the new Thor, They Call it Myanmar, Gravity, and Nebraska.

All good, but Nebraska was tremendous. It hit so close to home for me, but was worth the uncomfortable feelings in the end. Also, Will Forte was amazing.
