The Way We Eat: Why Our Food Choices Matter by Peter Singer is really good, very easy to read.

I shouldn't suggest things that I haven't actually read, but i've been told that Jonathan Safran Foer's 'Eating Animals' is worth reading.

I like what I've read of Mary K Fisher, and also an anthology of spices with histories and other info for every spice imaginable (but can't remember the author...).
