According to Netflix, Blue Velvet and The Breakfast Club are totally similar movies.

Huh.

Are there scenes from either movie that I'm forgetting about? Was there a scene where Molly Ringwald found a human ear in the library? Did Judd Nelson get violently beaten to Roy Orbison music by a drug-crazed Principal Vernon wearing lipstick?

...the HELL?

Was there an episode where Nick and Daniel put on cowboy hats and fork each other? Because I'm going to have to find that episode.

...I can't come up with a hypothetical cross-reference thing for that that isn't profoundly terrifying.

Also:

Because you like 30 Rock, may I recommend The L Word. Because they both feature chicks as the main characters? That's kind of depressing.

Because of my preference for action adventure films (don't judge me) Netflix believes I would enjoy Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment.

Somehow I doubt it.

Netflix is recommending MythBusters vol. 1 because I enjoyed Futurama vol. 1.

I don't like many action films, but I did give a positive rating for the original Shaft, and now Netflix thinks I love blaxploitation movies.

I'm not judging you at all. That is a hilarious example of Netflix missing the point. I am reminded of this Patton Oswalt bit about Tivo:

Because you enjoyed Little Miss Sunshine, try renting Sicko! Also, The Wrestler -> Drag Me to Hell? Truman Show -> Minority Report? Ghost World -> Yesterday (drama about AIDS in Africa)?

are these just based on what other people have rated highly and not the subject of the movie? it's weird because netflix categorizes everything, but it doesn't seem like they use those categories to make recommendations.

it must just be that a bunch of people who gave amelie 5 stars also gave born into brothels 5 stars. right?
