SAM WINCHESTER YOU ARE GODDAMN LIAR. Ugh. I was really hoping the curse would work.

I'm only halfway through the episode though.

That was a really abrupt ending.

So Sam is definitely not okay, but he doesn't even know why? Hmm.

Definitely not enough Cas, but otherwise a decent episode. I loved all of Bobby's confessions.

I rather enjoy that Jared is kinda doing his Blue Steel.

There's more to life than being really really ridiculously good looking!

I liked this ep better than last week's. Bobby talking about his pedicures was brilliant and I liked the face punching - Sam needed a good pasting for letting Dean get turned last week.

I also found the face-punching very satisfying.

Heh. I enjoy the last few minutes of Smallville as an opportunity to say “Awww, Sucky Show! How’ve you been, Sucky Show? …Still sucking, I see.”

I for one am not a fan of the face-punching. In context, what does it accomplish? Sam has physical pain, but if he’s not “feeling anything”, as he says, what does it bother him that his brother is upset enough with him to beat his face in?

Although I guess it maybe made Dean feel better for about 5 seconds.

Warning: rant! I am sorry, but this episode struck a gigantic pet peeve of mine.

I’m also not a huge fan of the implication of the episode. I just do not like it when shows fork with their own mythology to the point of meaninglessness.

As we have seen so far, a soul is the essence of a person. Dean’s soul went to hell; while there, he was himself – his personality, had his memories, and he returned to his body with memories of what his soul had done in hell. Supernatural mythology to date says: You are your soul, and your soul is you.

Even demons support this. Demons are basically corrupted souls. Many of them remember their human lives (Crowley remembers his son, Ruby remembered her life), and no matter what body they are in they retain their personality and memories. Ditto for possession. When Meg possessed Sam, she could pretend to be Sam, but really the personality and courses of action were entirely Meg. It’s the soul in the body, or at least in charge of the body, that determines “who” that is.

So here’s where my problem comes in. Sam has no soul, which more specifically means Sam’s soul is not in Sam’s body. Without his soul, how is he himself? I know he’s not ENTIRELY himself right now and that’s the point, but how is he himself at ALL? This season we have seen he has done things out of character, but he is still mostly himself. He talks like himself, he makes the right faces. He has his memories. Without his soul that should be impossible. He should be catatonic, or robotic or something.

I get that so far on Supernatural, the only bodies we’ve seen without souls are dead ones.

I think it’s great they want to address the question “what does a body (person) without a soul look like?” but the real question is “IN THIS WORLD what does a body without a soul look like?” I already know what a body without a soul looks like from Insomnia, by Stephen King, or from A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore. But this is Supernatural. “What does a body without a soul look like?” is only an interesting question if you’re going to answer it in the context of your existing mythology.

If Sam’s soul is not in his body, the most logical conclusion is, it is in hell (that’s where he landed last season after all). The next logical progression of events seems to me to be “how do we fix Sam?” – Dean and Bobby attempt to retrieve and replace Sam’s soul. Super!

But what happens then? Will Sam then have two sets of memories – one of what his body did with the Campbells and Dean, and one of what his soul was doing in hell? Will he have two personalities? Better Hunter Sam and Broken Puppy I Was In Hell Sam? what the fizzle?

I mean, it could potentially be sort of interesting (the two sets of memories insanity thing) but I don’t think that’s why the writers did it. I’d kind of like to give them that much credit, because I do love this show, but then again, this is not my first forking rodeo. I did not fall off the turnip truck yesterday.

Shut up, writers.

This had better be DAMN good, because I have seen this bullshiitake pulled before and frankly I doubt your ability to tie it all up with any kind of finesse.

I’d be happy to be proven wrong. We’ll see…

I assumed the point of the face-punching was to knock him out and and transport him to Bobby's safe room? Sure, Sam was all "I need help!" but how could Dean know if he was telling the truth? It's not like he has been until this point.

Hm. Possible. It played to me more as Dean just getting his anger out, but it could certainly be both.

The transportation thing never occurred to me, I thought Dean got punchy because he was mad.

Also, the whole, Sam / no soul thing bothers me too. It doesn't make sense.

I'm sure anger was part of it, but I don't think he would've actually knocked him out if he didn't plan to move him someplace.

Have they actually said he's soulless on the show? It seems to be the direction we're heading, but I don't remember hearing it confirmed out loud yet - and if that's the case, it's possible it's something else entirely.

Yeah, it's not that I think he wasn't knocking Sam out for trasnport; I think it's likely. It just wasn't what I got in the moment.

It was confirmed that Sam has no soul in the previews for next week's episode. (Which makes that not a spoiler, though that was my initial reaction to the preview. "Way to cliffhanger, Show. Not.") Cas does the Scary White Hand Of Ouch into his chest. (Yay! More Cas next week!)

I'm interested to see where they take the idea anyway.

I did totally love Bobby's True Confessions. I totally love Bobby all the time. Bobby is so great. I wish we'd gotten a little more time with Dean being Truth Cursed. Heh.

You know what I didn't even think of? I wonder if it would have worked on Cas?!? THAT would have been AWESOME.

Oh, okay. I watched it the day after so I didn't see the preview. Mystery solved!

I have got to stop saving these on my DVR, which causes me to avoid this thread and miss many pretty pictures and funny .gifs.

Can we get an episode where Cas and Bobby go off on a wacky adventure together?

This episode mostly sucks so far, but it has given me two weird parts where I flash and imagine odd things - when Cas does his angel cavity search on Sam, I flashed into dirty thoughts, and when Sam asked if Dean wanted to keep him in the hotel room forever, I briefly thought of the joys of always having Jared in a hotel room, then I thought it'd be more fun to have him out and about, and then I saw us out skipping through a field of yellow flowers. Seriously.

My DVR is nicely chock full.

And that would be really awesome.

I'm really hating this episode more with every passing second - Sam and his explanation that it was his idea to question the things and not tell Dean and all that. Someone go smack Sera?
